No way I would waste time trying to make something work that is currently giving lots of other people, including some computer geeks, problems.

As an earlier poster suggested, download Avast Anti-Virus and use it. It's a very highly rated anti-virus program, and they have a free version for home users available. I can attest that it works great.

Upgrade my 7.5 to 8.0 yesterday on Windows XP without a hitch. Guess I was lucky Try the 7.5 and then 8.0 upgrade...can't hurt anything. Also, have you signed up for their forum? AVG Free Forums They have a while section on 8.0 installation.

Also installed 8.0 AVG over the 7.5 with no problems except I had to lower my security stuff until I had it downloaded.

I've installed AVG 8 on several computers, and 2 virtual XP computers on my Mac without a problem. Download from FileHippo.com - no problems.

This is no easy task as mom is so far out in the boonies that she can only get dial-up! Sooooooooo,

So why don't you download the 7.5 & 8.0 to your PC and put them on a Data CD. Then you can install & uninstall all you want.

I'm trying to avoid having to drive over there. She's over 40 miles away from me, and I work until 6 p.m. (Mon-Fri) and until 5 p.m. on weekends. I just don't have the time to spend half a day going over there to try and fix it. I've been doing this remotely using "Go To My PC" which we have installed on her computer so that I can do these sorts of things from here.

I'm going to try Avast next, as we were unable to reinstall 7.5. Also, the problems so many folks are having with AVG lately makes me want to move away from it.

Thanks, everyone!

Julie

My 2 cents worth, and agreement with ReadyToGo. I quit using anti-virus programs years ago. Disclaimer-I won't recommend this, and don't discard your A/V if you are even 1% paranoid. I just feel that those programs are resource hogs and unless you update the protection file data daily, you are not fully protected anyway. After all, the protection only is developed after the virus is already loose. Also, the subscription A/V programs like Norton are really cash cows for their companies, considering you can get free programs or real time scans.
I believe in risk management. Don't open up suspect email attachments or pop-up messages. Be sensible about clicking on web links. Partition your disk so that your operating system and programs are on the main partition and keep all your personal files and data on a separate partition or saved to a separate disk. I have killed my OS several times by trying something stupid, but I can reload and recover in a couple of hours without any loss. I have never (knocking on wood here) got a virus even though I have been sent some in emails. I use an email provider that provides a virus check service, and I use IMAP protocol rather than POP so that I can control what is downloaded to my computer. Even my 96 year old mother-in-law who does email and some web surfing on her Windows 98 relic with no A/V program has never had a problem, and she is no tech whiz. If you do install an A/V, it has to be on a "clean" system because of all the internal stuff that those programs implement.

Do you have at least Service Pack 2 installed? See this thread. Note that you can reinstall AVG Free 7.5 as virus updates are still available until 12/31/2008. Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5 here.

.

Just went through this on a desktop PC. You have to have at least Service Pack 2 installed. Run windows update and try again.

I down loaded AVG a couple of weeks ago and started having problems.
Mostly very slow to reboot or start up, saying missing msconfig file.
Googled the problem and found lots of complaints, I have re-installed OS(XP)
and been happy with it now.

I have AVG 8 on my wife's laptop running XP and on my desktop running Vista. The Vista machine had a problem with Norton, it was never installed but their offer was on the machine when I bought it and I deleted it. I had to use the Norton uninstaller from their web site, then AVG 8 installed fine. Another problem was that I had to allow Zone Alarm to give complete access to all the AVG files. It works fine now. No problem with the XP installation. I recommend the AVG 8 forum for help.

By the way, they were both installed over AVG 7.5.

I DLed ver8 several days ago, but haven't tried to install it yet

I turned off automatic run of 7.5 about 6 weeks ago, when after updating, it started telling me one of my 'bought' programs that i had been using for 6 months was infected and would let me run it.

I have done manual scans of dl files to be save, but currently running without autoscan and and updates

considering the problems others are having I may not do the new install

this what comes from trying to make a program both Xp & vista compatible
