If it is not blocked can you wash dishes outside and dispose of the water where
ever the campground wants you to.At a private campground you may not be able to do that. At home give each family member a gallon jug of hot water and try taking a shower with that. Or put the plug in when someone takes a showere at home and see how much water they use.

I'd say find a place where you can hook it up to a sewer connection (I can do this at home in my driveway) And then open the grey tank. Then hang out in the trailer using water everywhere. If it starts to back up, you've got a big issue. if it all drains like it's suposed to, then you guys are using too much water or your tank isn't holding 40 gals.

If you just bought it then I would take it back to the dealer and have them show me what I'm doing wrong. They should have done an extensive walk through with you when you bought it but maybe they (or you) missed something.

When you empty next time see what comes out. Gray water should take 3-5 minutes to completely drain. You can hear it and see the hose wiggle.
That sounds like it would make sense...how do I open them?
I'm sorry but I don't think there is such a thing as a shut off valve on the actual water drains. There are shut offs for the water system coming into the water heater and incoming water lines from the fresh water tank, but none on the drain lines. Check the vents on the roof.

By now you probably already have your answers, but in case you don't, I'll give you my thoughts. Since your kitchen sink backed up, but the shower didn't overflow onto the floor, it seems you may have two grey tanks, and probabilities of both being clogged are remote. So in that regard, I'd say someone re-plumbed your system for direct drainage, like for a seasonal hookup, which brings it back to having just one grey water tank. You and your friend didn't buy the campers from the same dealer did you ?? Maybe both are rigged up the same way for the same reasons?? Anyway good luck, in this fix and future camping.

I'm brand new to RVs and this is a most interesting thread. Could it be that the tanks are clogged with "muck" of some kind? This would be more logical if the problem was in the black tank, but it seems a possibility.
I would certainly head back to the selling dealer and let them sort things out. Whatever the outcome, PLEASE post the end results/solution when you figure out what's going on.

HUH Your speaking of the HW bypass system and that won't have anything to do with this problem...
I looked up some Timberline units and although I didn't find any 19' models, I did find an 18' model and it indeed lists a 40 gallon gray water tank...
Here are the specs and floorplan of that unit:

Gross Dry Weight (lbs) 4140
Fresh Water Capacity 50
GVWR (lbs) 5600
Grey Water 40
Net Carrying Capacity 1035
Black Water 34
Hitch Weight lbs. 460
LPG Tank Cap. (lbs) 40
Length 23' 1" Awning Length 13'
Width 8'
Height 10'
If your filling a 40 gallon gray tank with one shower and a few sinkfulls of dishes, something is wrong somewhere... It could be that the vent pipe has dropped into the gray tank and won't fill all the way... I would look at the gray water tank if you can see it under the TT... Measure the tank and then multiple the length X width X height in inches and then divide that figure by 231... That will give you a pretty close approximation of the tank capacity... I'm wondering if someone didn't change the tank due to damage or whatever reason...

Since these are new Rv'ers, I bet these folks are just using way too much water. I know they said they used military showers and just a sink of water, but I bet somewhere the water usage is over the top. Empty the tanks, then with a 5 gallon bucket, fill it and dump it into the tub. Add up how many buckets it takes until the tub overflows. Let us know the answer. Then we can give sound advice rather than just speculating.

We are constantly on our grandkids about leaving the water on so long.
