Hi All,
We just picked up onme of those cheap WalMart blue inline water filters for an upcoming trip but I was wondering, how do you all take care of your water filters between trips? I have heard some people freeze them but is that ok to do with these blue inline filters or is that overkill?
The reason I got a filter is to keep us all healthy and leaving it out (and you can't get all the water out of them anyway once used) seems to defeat the purpose.
Replies?

We gave up on trying to filter all the water into the trailer since it's really not necessary IMHO and what we use for drinking, coffee, etc. is a Brita pitcher which we also use in the house when not camping. We even have a 1/2 gal milk jug in the bath for rinsing after bushing teeth and also use for flushing the toilet at night or on the road so we don't have to turn on the water pump. It sits in the sink when the sink isn't being used.

I always coil my hose and hook the filter back into it on both ends. This keeps critters out, keeps it moist and stops drips. If you're also on chlorinated water it holds some chlorine in it too.

I wouldn't think the freezer would be a good idea. If it is the in-line filter that I had, it has KDF in it which is supposed to prevent stuff from growing it.
I now have a canister filter which provides better flow. I just drain that and leave it in a tote between trips.
On our first trip with the canister, the filter caught a bunch of particulate stuff (looked like small pieces of rust). This keeps the TT plumbing clean, and I also drink the water.

Until this year I just capped each end of the filtere with the provided white plastic caps and toss it in a bin in the RV basement. I also connected the hose ends together to keep critters out. This year I bought a whole house water filter and an adjustable water pressure regulator so I'll have better water flow. I'll cap off the ends of the assembly (contained in a 5 gallon bucket) as before. We filter our drinking water again with a Pure pitcher, but that's mainly for taste; just like it better and we do the same thing here in the stick house.

Ok thanks for all the replies. For those of you who felt a filter is a waste of time, I would be using it firstly to protect the water pump (we have very silty soil up here that will do a number on your pump after time. Comes from all the glacier fed rivers and the sediment that they produce.) Secondly, I don't want my family getting sick and we won't always be in nice clean RV parks. Even then, some water up here has a lot of iron and other goodies in it.
And for those of you who do have a filter, capping the ends and putting it in the fridge sounds like the way to go. Our filter is also a KDF filter so I am not as concerned, but as they say, an ounce of prevention!

I made up an inline filter with replaceable cartridge. It filters down to either 1u or 5u (can't remember which). I drain it out between uses and leave it open to air dry.

I'll second the Wal-Mart "blue" filters. For about $17.00, they can't be beat. I don't really use them to clean up water for "drinking" either. We bring bottled water for drinking etc...
We use the filter to keep our TT water tanks (including hot water tank) from accumulating scale, rust and sediment from unknown faucet water sources. It's cheap insurance for your RV components (water pump, tanks, etc...).
As for storing the water filter? I tried using the white caps too and I tossed the filter into the trailer basement. About 3 weeks later, I took the filter out again and removed the caps. I noticed some clear slim oozing out of the filter. It was stored in hot temperatures. I figured it started producing bacteria, so I tossed it.
Now, I just buy a new one for our camping trips. We go camping every 3 months, so spending $17.00 every three months for a new filter doesn't bother me in the least. I can afford that. I don't want to store it in the fridge etc....
