Yup! My $20K++ brand new Goldwing with only 400 miles on it. I was on lunch break during the last day of my Motorcycle Saftey Foundation - Beginners Riders Course today and decided to go fill it up with gas.

I pulled into the station entrance and was headed towards the pump when a driver pulled out from another pump one lane over headed out the same entrance I came in. Suddenly he made a hard left turn clipping the back of my bike knocking me on my side. There was no way I could keep a bike this heavy right side up.

I stayed on my feet the whole time. The bike ended up on it's bumpers on the right side. Good thing it didn't set off the airbag!!

I learned today that I can 'right' it if I have to. I put the side stand down and turned my back to the bike and 'power lifted' it up back up.

I believe I lost my temper a little at first after the accident letting out a few curse words in frustration to the driver. I didn't call him any names, but cursed the situation. He was nice and felt really bad about it. I hope I don't have to fight him to get the damages paid. He quickly gave me all his information.

Funny thing about this - I aced both the written exam and the riding evaluation during the class! Proud to say I was the only one out of 24 in the class to do so. Too bad the training didn't carry over into the practical world!

I backed the bike into the garage and don't plan on telling my wife about this, so mums the word if you see her.

Hey kwlincoln think of the incident on the bright side you didn't get hurt other than your feeling and the bike. I don't know if this is your 1st wing or not, I've had seven. Let their insurance company give you a check. Then go on e-bay and buy the parts normally you can get any color bags and center for under $300.00 and if you order from honda it's like 1500.00 a bag plus labor to get installed if they settle too cheap, don't let them get prices from the dealer for parts and installation.. The e-bay stuff is mostly trike conversions so color is not an object and the bikes are generally new I have several sets for back up. Changing out the bags is nothing. Buy a manual and take your time it's a piece of cake, make sure you get all the rubber gromets off the old tupperware and put on new it does not come with it, and pocket the rest of the money for a nice trip. Any questions e-mail me and I will help. Will be out of town on a rally from 5-18 June after that I will be available.

kwlincoln,

First of all, I'm glad you're okay and your bike is okay. There's not much worse than chrome and plastic hitting the road.

BUT...

What the heck are you doing riding your Wing to a beginner class in the first place???!!!??? I've been an MSF instructor for the past 22 years (and ridden Goldwings for a bit longer) and I tell my students NOT to ride their bikes to class for several reasons. One, the size difference between their bike and the class bike can be awkward to adjust to quickly (as you have learned), like heading back to class or out to lunch.

And if you would have been using the skills they should have taught you in class (SEE), you wouldn't have had this problem in the first place. You should have seen the posibility for this to happen and would have taken appropriate action ahead of time.

Aceing the tests just means you paid attention in class and are a good enough rider to pass the test (which really isn't that hard to do anyway). The real test will be how long you survive on the street. Falling over after playing a little bumper cars in a parking lot isn't a good omen.

Now pull your head out of the clouds, get back down here to Earth and pay attentiong to EVERYTHING when you're riding your bike (or driving your car).

The thing car drivers dont realize is a little accident such as this can end with the motorcycle rider in a wheel chair.

People cant bother to pay attention and the motorcyclist is always the loser in these situations.

I would have exacted payment right then and there out of his hide.

kwlincoln - First let me say that as an MSF Ricer Coach I won't jump to the conclusion that you rode your wing in the BRC , nor will I condemn for doing so if that was your choice. If you did ride in the BRC and scored high then you displayed certain required proficient skills. I'll also comment that you were aware of your surroundings enough to know some clueless driver clipped you in the rear. Glad you're ok The wing is a tough and fun ride.

AUWing,
kwlincoln didn't say anything about riding his wing in the BRC (cuz if he did, I'd be asking where were the Rider Coaches?), but it was obvious that he rode his Wing to the course.
And I hope you weren't implying that I was condeming him for doing so because I didn't say that.

I don't know your situation but based on the stated fact that you were attending the BRC, you might want to reconsider the Gold Wing. That is one heck of a big heavy bike for a beginner.

Maybe you are not a beginner, you did not state that you are or aren't. I did not take the BRC until I had been riding for over 25 years. Those courses did not exist when I started riding 35 years ago. Glad your okay though!

Here are pictures and demo on how to pick up a fallen bike. I have seen Skert perform this maneuver at BMW Rallies. She is 5'3" and 118 pounds and makes it look effortless.
