While traveling this past week an a half I struck up conversations with truckers at the fuel points. Three guys all driving brand new ( and SHARP looking) Peterbuilts. Each told me the same story ( which I found fascinating ) about their rigs.
I was told that Peterbuilt was using CAT engines as their standard "default" engine..( not sure what displacement though??) rated at 350 HP and GOVERNED to run between 66-68 on the open road!! And to a man each CAT engine had FleetGuard filters on it everywhere and when I asked why...I was told that FleetGuard made a better filter!!!
At more than $120K a rig ( which I was told by each) I doubt they cared about the cost of filters very much??
Anyway...just thought Id pass on what I learned by talking to those guys
2000 Country Coach Allure; Cummins ISC 330 HP; 71/2 - 8 MPG regardless
2002 Jeep Liberty
Cat has published test results that show their filters work better than non-Cat filters. Besides the prices are about the same so I see no reason to use other brands. At my last service the dealer even had a Cat cartridge for my Racor fuel/water separator, same price as I've paid for Racor cartridges.
The engine maintenance book that came with my Cummins ISB engine says that Cummins tested and recommends Fleetguard filters. But check your filter carefully when buying a replacement. I recently e-mailed Fleetguard to ask where I could purchase their product locally (CA) for a pending oil change. Gave them all the specifics about my engine and went to purchase the filter they recommended. Bought two filters so I'd have one for the next time; guess what - wrong numbers. The threads (opening) on the filter were too small for the filter attachment on the engine. Now I'm stuck with two filters I can't use. That's the breaks.

Take them back where you bought them. If at a Cummins dealer..THEY can still use them for servicing rigs
