So there we were, drinking beer, fishing for Salmon, out of Port Alberni.
Zeeeeeeeeee..., got one on, beers down, other two lines in, grab the net, and for two of us, of course, our beers. Bit of thrashing further out & cussing on the boat, and eventually we can see a very large Spring ( TYee? US?) in the clear water below us. Beautiful fish. but just as he was really close to the boat, a seal came out of the depth after our salmon and just as he was about to take it, a HUGE black shape came out of nowhere, from below. I think we all must have flinched away as no one actually saw what happened next, but the salmon, the seal, the 'sea monster' just disappeared.
The three of us were all sure that the 'monster' was all dark or black, so it was not a Killer Whale (Orca), which are very common around here.
It must have been some kind of whale, but how many are predators? We never saw anything surface later either.
We never did find out what it was!
Here's a true one. DW and I just returned from AK. Went fishing in Kenai River out of Soldotna - RW camp on Big Eddy Rd., Sean was our guide, Caught 2 salmon - DW had a 33lb, I a 27lb. Gave away the 27, the meat from the 33 should be here Thurs. Also caught a couple trout. Beginners' luck.
Going down to Valdez ourselves for a little fishing around the 20th of July for a few days. Hopefully the pinks will be in there hot and heavy. If so we may be back down in early August for the silver salmon.
A couple years back we went down to Valdez but it rained day and night the whole time we were there and wasn't anyone catching much more than a cold! I hope this years trip is more pleasant, but like they say, the worst day fishing is better than the best day working! We may not have caught many fish but we had a good time not doing it!

If you are going to Valdez for Pinks, go to Allison Point and throw Pixies and get set for fun! The return to the hatchery peaks around the middle of July but we have fished around the 20th before and caught all we wanted. My preference is for redder meat so we will concentrate on the combat fishing for reds on the Kenai at Swiftwater campground from July 20 to 25 this year. Fish On! (wear eye protection if you fish wth the crowds on the Kenai!)We are always too early for silvers except the time that we flew over Cook Inlet to Big River Lakes for some guided fun.

What guide service did you use for that trip? My wife and I went w/Talon Air for silvers and reds in July while our kids were visiting the grandparents. We came out with our limit of salmon and one was a silver. Had so much fun that trip we decided to take the kids for silvers in mid Aug. I lost count of catch-and-release at 50. A trip worth doing if you can make it for the silvers.
Friends at Russian River for the past 11 days have been limiting out on Reds. Nice size, says they are averaging larger than usual for the first run(8 lbs.). Not to much competition as river has half the amount of anglers as normal.

We went with Talon Air too in 2006. Took my daughter and son and son in law and everyone limited plus we had a lunch of BBQ salmon and saw bears! And enjoyed every minute!

gandalf12,
Sounds like our trips in '07. Talon Air has a wonderful setup w/beautiful planes. That Wolverine Creek area is something else when the fish are there. When we went for silvers in mid-Aug, we actually fished for them in a clear water slough down stream of the lake. After fishing there until it died down (the bite stopped 'cause they all got sore mouths), we then went to the Wolverine Ck hole to get our last couple of silvers for our limit. There were still thousand of reds stacked up at the creek w/lots of silver bullets swimming around. It was just a little more difficult hooking the silvers while trying not to snag the reds. Hope it works out so we can get back over there again this August.
BTW...Who was your guide? Ours was the younger Tom(if I remember correctly he's the owners son-in-law), who treated us very well. Everyone was great though...They have a nice family operation going!

I believe we had Tom the elder...mid 50s smoker? He had a younger guide with him running the other boat. Hope the red run on the kenai isn't late as predicted! We only have 5 days to fill the freezer. Heres a pic of my Klutina king from 2004.No kings this trip as we don't have the time! Maybe some Grayling on the Denalli Highway though.
