I bought my RV because I wanted it and i bought a new one because I wanted it. We use ours for weekends but his year I looked at the fact I own it and if I use it for our bigger trips what would it cost. I didn't include the cost of the RV since I didn't buy it for these trips. I figured I will cost about half of what I would normally spend. I might decide after using it for these trips that we liked the hotels and condo's better but we are going to try it since it will be less expensive.

We just can't seem to find on any map the highway from here to Maui. I also understand the scenery between here and there is pretty boring. After a while one gets pretty tired of the same old thing. And there are no camping spots or even Wal-Marts to stop at. I guess we'll just have to fly.

This is why I love having a PopUp vs some big RV. Easy to tow with a more fuel efficient and cheaper vehicle and I was able to pay cash for it so no payments.

Our vacations are centered around our ATV, the trailer is an ATV accessory and just makes it more comfortable.

If we "travel" we take the car, I would much rather travel long distances in the car than towing our trailer.

Like a lot of you, we have been trying to figure out where we stand on future vacations.

Should we fly to our destination, rent a car, do the motel/restaurant scene, AND pay for gas?

Should we use our vehicle that gets better gas mileage to road trip somewhere, doing the motel/restaurant scene, AND pay for gas?

Or, should we use our RV and gas-guzzling truck, pay $30 or less to sleep, eat our own food in our own kitchen, AND pay more for gas?

When I crunch the numbers the RV option begins to look more and more feasible.

I guess we could do "air-only" and not rent a car and stay with our kids. But, if airlines pass their increasing costs to us, which they MUST do in the face of rising costs, then the air-only option becomes less affordable.

Maybe the only people who can afford to travel in the future will be RV owners.

Even at today's gas prices, if you already own an RV it's still cheaper then flying/renting/hotelling/eating out. Not even a contest for me. Plus with reduced airlines, and reduced flights flying is now a major hassle. Also, if you are flying and something goes wrong (weather, airport traffic, sun spots, etc.) you and your family enjoy a lovely vacation in an airport. If you are in an RV and something goes wrong, limp to the nearest campground and you are still way better off then in an airport.

We bought our RV last year. Since then we've gone somewhere nearly every weekend from April to October. Without the RV do you know how many times we'd have gone away in that same time span? Maybe twice. It is just so much easier to make a campground reservation, throw some food in, hop in and drive off then worrying about hotel reservations, where to eat, etc.

I don't understand the question either. I suppose it's a more serious problem if you already have the RV, and you want to take a vacation of the type that doesn't call for the use of the RV. Whereas, people like us do not have this option. Due to the high rate of inflation, we now have to FIRST scrape together the money to pay for the fuel. How much we are able to scrape together determines what kind of vacation we take. In our case, there is no question that we PREFER to go in the RV, that's why we bought it in the first place.

Not even a question for us. Sure the cost of fuel is burdening all of us but each day is another that I won't have to spend here. Spending those days worring about wheter or not I can use my RV is a bigger waste of a resource that I have no way to extend. We just had a 3700 mile trip out west and had a great time I would not have enjoyed as much without the MH. The rest of the summer will be spent closer to home but we will have new and exciting times ahead. You have to go with the flow.

For us it all depends on the situation and the time restraints due to my work schedule. In early Apr. we took a 6 day vacation to Las Vegas & Laughlin. Would have loved to take the 5vr but that would have added 3 days minimum onto either end of our trip. As it was we flew out, had gotten cheap fares, rented a car and spent 3 days in each place, hotel rooms were comped by Harrahs. This weekend Diane has a
2 day Arts and Crafts Festival about 2 hours from here and we're taking the house with us and spending three days there. If we have the time we'll take the 5vr.

It depends on what you want out of the vacation, we do both. We love camping but there are many things my family enjoy including museums and other urban type activities. Depending on the size of your family and the distance to your destination flying may be cheaper. The bottom line is, each type of travel has its advantages and disadvantages. We plan each vacation by deciding on what we want to do and where we want to go. This ultimately dictates the travel and lodging requirements.

We bought our fifth wheel so we could afford to vacation. That said, we also have four children and one dog. We have to shell out for two hotel rooms even en route. (hotel rules, not ours) Then hopefully find a pet friendly hotel or board our fur baby. Air fare for six makes driving a no brainer. Now that we have our fifth wheel, we will be able to afford to visit family or take fun trips, while enjoying the conveniences/cleanliness of our own place. Ideally, we'd have a class A. That is a bit further down the road.
Also, with a 6ft. 6in husband and four kids following suit...they don't make gas efficient that will fit us. May check out the yukon hybrid to see if that fits.
