You will be better served becoming a South Dakota resident.

+1 for sure, and I am a REAL Texan.

Just make sure your medical insurance will be valid in which ever state you choose.

I suggest you look at the LEGAL ramifications as to what each state offers to protect you, your family and your ASSESTS. There is more than just a state and a mail service involved.

We are SD residents but the mail goes to Texas (Escapees). Phone comes out of NY.

I would be reluctant about selecting Texas, IIRC they nail you on property tax on cars/motorhomes, etc. and you have to go back every couple of years to renew stuff?
SD seems to be a better choice.
also check out medical insurance coverage.

No, there is no personal property tax on cars/motorhomes. And you don't HAVE to go back every year for vehicle inspections - just have them inspected when you come into the state. Takes a whole 20 minutes!

If you need to have individual health insurance make sure you understand what you are getting. The smaller the state, the smaller the insurance pools and they can have some restrictions that might not be good for you.
