From Bishop to Anaheim is mostly down hill, till you get at the split of 395 and 14.. then it goes mostly uphill for about 20 miles or it seems.. The speed limit is 55 while towing in California, so 52 or 53 is slightly under..Diesel was 5.19 per Gallon... this encouraged me to slow down since we are on Vacation for 2 weeks..NO need to hurry. I figure it this way... First, going over 55 in California is Expensive if cited, second, I would lose time getting a cite, and lastly, my insurance rates would increase. So driving over 55 to save a few minutes may cost more than just the added cost of fuel.Yea, it does kinda get to me driving that slow, but if time was important, I would have probabley have flown or at the least take a car and not tow..Going back I hope to break 10 mpg since it is uphill... I mostly average 8.5 mpg on the return trip.. there is a grade that goes from about 3000 ft in Bishop to over 8000 ft over Conway summit of about a 6 to 7 % grade for 20 miles plus...
I ALMOST WENT TO SLEEP DRIVING THRU ca last winter ,avg 11 mpg pulling almost 23000 gross fiver/truck,55/65 little diff,5.9 cummins likes to pull at 72 mph, will probably learn some new road/speed manners in 08.

I agree, but California has Rvs pulling a trailer limited to 55 while others can be limited to 70 mph... This is very dangerous on long windy 2 lane roads like the one called 395 between Reno and Susanville... there are many head on collisions probably due to this law..
