A friend of my wife's is looking to get her husband an "automatic crank" as she puts it for their pop up and she came to me for advice. I'm assuming she's referring to a socket genie. But she did say she remembered him mentioning something about getting it at Wal Mart. That being said, I think she might be thinking about that Gator Grip thing

I'm thinking the socket genie would be a better solution. Here's the caviat. They have a 95 Palomino (not sure the model) pop up and I looked on this socket genie site ( http://www.customcylindersintinc.com/socket_jenie.htm ) and couldn't find any listing for Palomino's. Do they make one that will work for Palomino's?

**EDIT**
it looks like (according to RV Workshop's website) the Palomino's use the Goshen lift system. So I'm thinking the LVSG-625 is the one we're looking for.

Can anyone confirm?

I would think a really good cordless screwdriver might be what she is looking for. It could be used to crank up the trailer top.

She will need a socket genie. Not available at Wal-Mart. you are one the right track. she will also need a good Cordless drill. Also not available at Wal-Mart. She will need at least a 18V drill with 450 inch pounds of torque. I have a 24 Volt DeWalt. Does a great job. A 14V drill will not do it.

If you go to puxtradingpost.com and click on popups and scroll down
you will see they carry the genie 625 that is for a 7/8 square drive
and the 400 that will fit starcraft modles prio to 2002. The 400
has the oval shaped hole in the crank. Hope this helps.

Right, I know she'll need to get him a good 24V cordless with non-plastic/nylon gearing to handle the torque. My main question is which socket genie to get for the Palomino

I have a 2000 Palomino and the 18 volt DeWalt drill did NOT crank the roof up...it would only go about 1/4 of the way up...just not enough power and the roof is too heavy. I know other Pal owners have encountered the same problem. I solved the cranking problem by adding an electric lift and it works like a dream. It is made by carefree of Colorado and it is just wonderful. So I guess it would all depend on the size of the roof as to whether the drill and socket genie will work. I know it didn't work for my Pal. It took 36 cranks to get the roof all the way up, and on most other campers, the ratio is much more? so the drill works great. I know for Fleetwood it takes about 76 cranks to fully extend.

Be careful with the cordless, it requires a lot of torque to raise the roof. On my E2, my Dewalt 7.8 amp drill did it, but there was a minute amount of acrid smell in the air. When we got the E4, the 7.8 didn't raise it without belching acrid smoke. We had to upgrade to a 9.0 amp, low speed 1/2inch craftsman drill. Check craigslist, I bet you could find a hoss drill to do it properly.

I've got a 19.2 Craftsman that will lift my roof most of the way up. I think a smaller pup or no a/c it would do just fine. I was considering this Carefree system, looks like you could buy one for about as much as a good cordless drill. (The Dewalts I looked at were around $300, and I think that's about what Carefree shows for the MSRP) My only question was does it have a provision for a manual crank? I'd hate to get someone and not be able to setup due to a dead battery or some other electrical problems.

Back to OP's question, I think the only difference is if the crank is square or round. You could ask her to go look and maybe measure the hole if it's square, but I think they're all 7/8". If it's a Goshen with a square hole, you've picked the correct Socket Genie.

Here's the manufactures web site: http://www.customcylindersintinc.com/socket_jenie.htm

It doesn't list Palomino, but does say with the Goshen. Also there are only 4 different models. There is a unique tool made for Coleman, Coachmen/Viking and Starcraft. The 625 fits everything else.
