So what does everyone think about the new 'A' Drivers licence with an 'R' restriction for vehicles pulling a trailer over 4500 KGs or 10000 LBs???????

condition
(R) Effective June 16, 2008:

Drivers with a restricted Class A licence condition would be prevented from operating:

a motor vehicle pulling double trailers
a motor vehicle pulling a trailer with air-brakes.

Interesting. RV's are mentioned but most of the faqs refer to commercial drivers.

It should have been a Class "A" NC for non comerical instead of Class "A" R. I have written the OMT on this subject. They need to make a set of rules that apply only to non comerical Class "A" R drivers.
At least now it is recognized you can take a recreational vehical in for a Class "A" R test. I think it is a step in the right direction, but it still leaves a lot of confuseing rules.

The problem is in that little caveat of the trailer being over 4500kg's. The law quite simply says; "A" license is required. The license "modification" they're suggesting will solve all of the problems for the RV'er simply requires you to perform the same tests (written & driven)as the guys piloting 80,000lbs rigs but because you can take the test using your RV it limits you to the restrictions outlined in above post. It also obligates you to a medical exam & re-testing on an annual basis after age 65. In other words; you jump through the same hoops a commercial guy does but you don't get the full license!

There really isn't any choice in the matter, to be towing legally, a trailer (any trailer) over 10,000lbs GVWR requires either a full "A" or the new restricted "A"!

You may continue pulling your 36' triple slide with your 3/4 or 1 ton pick up and escape the MTO's notice forever but, then again, there might be that occasion where someone wearing a uniform is having a bad hair day and then life will get very complicated after they look at the sticker on the side of your trailer.

I have definitely changed my tune on this issue as some here on this forum have given me very good, factual knowledge about the requirements. I have also contacted the MTO to ascertain what is required to comply with ALL of the laws. In short, it means an 'A' license when hooked to my trailer and a CVOR when I'm not.

Of course, there's always the option of buying a big ol' D/P motorhome that weighs more than my combined rig and continuing in blissful ignorance with seemingly nary a glance form the LEO's.

It is damned well about time. The rest of North America needs to follow suit. If I had to complete a test to show my ability to handle a larger vehicle, Class 1 with air in BC, then RV'ers should also demonstrate and be licensed to operate vehicles and combinations larger than their daily driver.

I wonder how Ontario is going to enforce out of province/country drivers though?

Isnt the 4500kg weight referred to for the Trucks RGW before you need to get the truck inspection devices (SSC)?? ...I believe the RV weight is 4600kg/10138lb RV weight where you would need a class "A" licence....

I have upgraded my RGW to 4400kg........I have a "G" Lic.......the permit portion of the ownership gives the weight of my RV as 4483Kg.. the placard on the side of the RV states 6398Kg ...the UVW placard inside the RV gives the breakdown as UVW of 4488Kg and the rest as Cargo Carrying Capacity..so If I am not carrying anything in the tanks and very little cargo I will likely be weight legal..I doubt the guy with the bad hair would initiate actions based on the placard weight alone as he would need the actual weight of the RV... The RV weighed alone will be at about 4600Kg but when attached to the Truck the pin weight goes onto the weight of the truck and off the RV...I am pushing the limits as far as the licence goes but I beleive I would be considered to be legal..
As someone said..meeting the guy with the bad hair may be my downfall if he lives by the black and white written word...I should be OK if I dont collect to much food or toys.....

The Ontario law will not affect out of province drivers AS LONG AS they are legal in their province or state of residence.

Hey skip good to see you.......the 4600kgs (approx 10,000 lbs)is the GVWR not what the trailer actually weighs. The potential is there.

I don't have a problem doing the test to get an 'A' licence. My problem is, for the ten times I take the 5er out every year I have to pay for a medical. I'm hoping that the MOT in their great wisdom LOLOLOLOL sees this aspect of the 'A' licence requirement, and takes that part out.
