Hey guys
We are staying at a campground for 4 days that has hookups but no sewer. The way we take showers, wash hands, and do dishes that grey water holding tank will fill up quick. The campground has a dump site, but I don't want to keep pulling the trailer over there, dump, then setup again and so on and so on. I know you can buy a portable tank to dump with, but those are expensive. Is there anything else I can use to dump only the grey water? Our black should be fine until we leave. I don't want to be the talk of the campground, or get kicked out of it. Is it proper to use anything else besides those portable tanks?
Thanks

I noticed at Oregon State Parks campgrounds that there were "grey water " barrels around the campground. How do you use them? Only with portable tanks? Can you drive up to one and pull out your hose and drop your grey water?

The CG rules will tell you what is "proper". I know one guy who parks next to a woods if possible and has a lid on his drain cap with a garden hose connector and he runs it out into the woods over night slowly to get rid of his gray water. The fewer doing this the better the smell, etc I am sure.

Please do not dump grey water on ground. It could cause major "Overuse" problems, bugs, etc. Some CGs have Grey Water dump areas (e.g. a hole in ground with wire mesh over it and a sign that says "Grey Water Only")

When we dont want to have to dump tanks, we limit our grey water use by showering in the bathhouse, using some paper products to limit dishwashing, use baby wipes / wet wipes to wash hands etc.

I wouldn't want to camp in the site that housed the hose guy below. Would you?

Maybe 10 to 15 years ago Good Sam published and article on grey water and found that after it had been in a holding tank for several days it was more harmful than the sewage in a black holding tank.

Now as many of you may know the State of Georgia is in a water crisis and some are suggesting the use of grey water for lawn water and such.

The Georgia Health dept has this to say about Grey Water....

" HEALTH CONCERNS

"Properly treated and continuously monitored gray water can be a valuable and safe resource for landscape irrigation. However, ignoring problems and not checking the system periodically can lead to human health and maintenance difficulties. Misused gray water can spread typhoid fever, dysentery, hepatitis and other bacterial and viral problems.

Disinfection is critical for gray water held more than 3 hours. Health hazards--especially with eye contact-- are present in dissolved and suspended organic material and detergents."

Gray water held more than 3 hours must be disinfected because it contains more harmful bacteria than sewage does. A chlorine concentration of 0.5 ppm will disinfect gray water. As gray water is held overnight or longer, the chlorine slowly moves out of solution. The chlorine in laundry wastewater is too dilute to disinfect a gray-water holding tank."

The key is gray water held for more than 3 hours. There is a lot of difference in using the water in a dishpan and then tossing in out....versus let it ferment in a holding tank for several days.

Or just use paper plates and take showers at the campground bath house.
