Ever been at a campground with no dumpsite at all? I stay at one every Labor Day weekend. All the sites are wooded and a lot of people rent by the month. I don't know what they do but I dump the gray water in the woods and haul the black to a different campground on the way home. You can bet there's a lot of gray water flowing in the "rustic sites."

We do our dishes in a plastic basin and dump the water down the toilet when we don't have a sewer connection. That will help some since the black tank always fills up slower than the grey.

I do this also when I'm trying to conserve grey tank space. Another thing I do is to catch the water that runs while I am waiting for it to run hot in a container and use it for the next flush. Those two things, along with taking showers at the bathhouse, help a great deal. One of my biggest surprises when I first got my trailer was how quickly the grey tank fills.

This is still a mind-boggling thing for me altogether....why can we use our outside shower to wash hair, body, hands, dishes, dog...etc, but we cannot drain water used for the exact same things on the exact same ground?

4 of us camped for 5 days and we only had to empty gray one time - 4 days into the trip.

We washed hands using the foam type soap - needs less water to rinse and wash hands. took showers at the bathhouse - they were very clean and nice (we typically use our own). Dishes - mainly paper was used and I did a lot of 1-skillet meals. Wiped out the skillet with a paper towel to aid in the soap/water cleanup. Any dishes used were put in a dishpan filled with soap and water and washed and rinsed outside and then the local tree or bush got some water. If the inside shower was used it was navy style.

Or just use paper plates and take showers at the campground bath house.

DINGDINGDING!!! We have a WINNER!!!

We stayed a a SP here in MO and had Electric/Water and no Sewer. By using PAPERplates, and using the Shower house, and teh necessary room, we were able to maintain 6 days of grey and Black water. Dumped at the dumpstation on our way out. No big deal...

You will find that you have to adjust your shower habits. What takes place at the stick house does NOT happen IN the RV. We can take a shower (One at a time of course... )in less than 6 Gallons of water. For longer "Relaxing" showers, use the bath house.

You will learn to adjust accordingly. It takes a season or so... But, you will get it... We all did finally...

Just my $.02 worth..

If you visit the camping section at wal mart you can find a 7 gallon blue water jug that looks remarkably like the smallest blue totes available. I just use a garden hose connector, fill this and then carry it to the nearest restroom and dump down the floor drain or drain near an outside spigot. If you're uncomfortable use a permenant marker to label the jug for grey water use only.

Grey water "stored" in the holding tank is the problem. It gets nasty and is filled with all kinds of bacteria and it stinks too. If you don't want to haul the tote to the dump station, you will have to use the bathhouse for showers, dishpans for dish washing, small bowls for hand washing and do not dump your cooking water into the drains.

I took some photos of a spot where someone dumped grey water in the brush - one on the day of the dump and one 10 days later - just to see what became of the mess. It wasn't pretty and it isn't something you want around you, your kids, your pets and neither does anyone else.

Leave only footprints behind.

Strange....DH came home today and said JC Whitney has a 22g waste water tote on sale for 99.00 w/free shipping. Needless to say, we jumped on that one! Guess I don't need to worry about this issue any more!

Bull. If there was a mess after 10 days it was more then gray water.

Agreed. As a kid we dumped gray water from kitchen and tub baths out in the yard for 7 years before getting plumbing. The only ugly stuff was what we called "dish water" grass that was very dark green grass and tough to cut.

If we just had a fact/fiction post indicator on the forum.
