In the wife's Suzuki I changed from dino to synthetic and saw an immediate 1.5MPH increase. Same driver, same gas. same route 5 days a week at the same time of the day. Same thing happened on her Tahoe when we had that. Yea, I am a believer. Once the Cummins is broken in it will get synthetic too.

I have used synthetic since Mobil 1 came out, and, I still use it. I change the filter about every 5k and oil every 10-15k.
I have never seen a change in mileage.
If you are going to change oil often (3k) then std oil will work just as well in 'normal' usage.
The only truck fleet that I knew of using it would not change oil unless the oil analysis for that vehicle showed a need. They did have much better filters and kept them fresh. They had a couple of trucks that went 100k without needing a change.

I use Amsoil Syn in the Dmax because it's a higher quality lubricant. It makes for easy winter starting. The engine seems to run a little cooler when pulling the 5vr. As for improved mileage, I really can't say.

I use Mobil 1 in the engine, transmission, transfer case, differentials. And Valvoline synthetic (DOT 3,4) brake fluid. Mileage is no different. My Ford gauges do not move so I have no idea if it runs cooler. I change the oil at 10k, trans fluid 12/18 months, and the rest every 2/3 years.
If Mobil 1(or other synthetic) is compatible with your transmission I would swap that first. With Mobil 1 in the crankcase I think you could take a couple laps around the country and still wait to change it when you get home. Just top off as needed.

Amsoil in engine and diffs. Trans. set a lock up code with performance converter on Amsoil. DexIII no code. No mileage change. Primarily used for temp protection. Delo black in 2000 miles. Amsoil black in 7000.The dual engine oil filter set up helps. Filters every 10,000. Oil every 30,000. 175,000 miles pulls strong.

Not as much change in mileage now as in beginning when Syn oils first came out. Reason is that most oils have additives with the same long-chain molecules as synthetic, which helps lubrication in them also. When I first started using synthetic, a 10 percent increase in mileage was the rule, along with double oil mileage. Back then, we changed the filter, and unless the oil was black, just added enough to top off. Amszoil would change color, but no sludge.

I have used Shell Rotella Syn for years. Will not use anything else. Also recommend regular transmission service when towing....

You might consider installing a bypass oil filter. It will double or triple your oil life and you will find the oil after 20 or 30 thousand miles is just as good as when it went in. The oil will still turn black, but the particulates soot will be next to nothing. The bypass filter companys (Gulf Coast and Filtration Solutions to name two) offer oil sample testing and you will be amazed at the results. I have used the bypass system from Filtration Solutions for several years on several trucks and it really works. Change the oil filters every 10 thousand miles and the oil every 30 - 40 - 50. Depends on the oil sample tests.
