I was reading my latest copy of RV View last night and read a kind of scary article about a surge suppressor. There was also a picture of a badly burned and melted suppressor. The fellow said he and wife were in their MH and smelled something burning. When he checked the suppressor was on fire. He put it out but it burned a small place on his MH. He went on to say that others in the CG lost some appliances due to the spike but no fires. He seemed pleased that he lost no appliances but it sounds like he nearly lost his MH. He also stated he rushed out and got another suppressor because of the great job it did protecting his appliances.
Good thing he was there and not asleep when this happened.
I think I would rather replace a microwave than my camper or FAMILY.
Not sure why the suppressor was on the camper and not at the power pole.

From what was left of it in the picture it appeared to be the plug-in type.

I thought that was odd too, said he had it on the side of the MH in a "compartment". It's definitely the Portable Plug-In model. Must have had it mounted and using an extender power cable to the post. Looked like the same one I have, but I only hang it at the post. If Lightning hits it, it could meltdown or catch fire so no way would I mount it on the outside of the TT.

We keep ours at the pole, He might have had it in the compartment to keep it from getting swiped, best he get a hardwired one if he's worried about that, no way would we put ours in the compartment.

I have seen too many computers fried due to suppressors not working on brownouts, blackouts, and even some surges. So I have UPS's on both of my computers with one of them also working for our satellite system and digital tv box. Most all UPS's also have surge suppressors built into them as well.
