Tiffin quality and service is legendary. The phaeton is the #1 selling DP. Tiffin made the changes in weight distibution as NOT to have a problem with CCC.
As far as price, there are good deals out there, but being the top seller don't expect the moon on discounts...

Seem like a lot of weight moved to the front Axle too me.
Why do you say that? It takes the weight from the right rear and moves it to the left front for better balance. How much does 4 6 volt batteries weigh? If your front axle is that close to being overloaded you are in trouble.
How can you say it's better balance? How do you know that? 4 batteries weight at least 150 to 250 lb and a propane tank full at least 200 to 300 lb . That's a possible 500 lb up front. That's a long way to run battery cables to the rear too.

I have never seen any numbers that place them as #1. Last look I saw the Fleetwood Bounder was #1 and Monaco is the top Class A seller overall. Tiffin does not make that many a year.
Something about putting the propane tank in the right front corner of the coach just bothers me. Don't think I want a propane tank to take the brunt of a potential accident, and be literally right at the front entrance door to the coach!
What are they thinking?

I did not even think of that. You are right. Wow, that does not seem to smart.
Have a friend with a 08 Phaeton and his problem is the rear axle not the front. Just axle weights not four corner weights. As you see they are just 640 pounds shy of the 20,000 pound rear axle spec. 4-6 volts batteries must be 200 pounds. It not just the weight but we it is located that determines it distribution from front to rear and side to side. If all else fails check the ride height adjustment.
Front Axel: 10,480
Rear (Drive) Axel: 19,360
Jeep Toad: 4,320
Total Rig: 34,160
Our sticker states:
GVWR: 14,528 KG 32,000 lbs
GVWR Front: 5,448 KG 12,000 lbs
GVWR Rear: 9,080 KG 20,000 lbs
When I weighed we had:
Grey Water: 1/3 full
Black Water: 2/3 full
Fresh Water: 2/3 full
Fuel: 100% full (had just filled up)

1. is 360 hp and 1050# torque enough for 36' class a in the mountains
- Generally "Yes," - We didn't have the slightest trouble "out West" this past year and we were also towing a Saturn Vue - we have "slightly" less HP and torque, very slightly, but it is less, and our very adequate (40' RV)
2. looking at model 36qsh any thoughts
- I'm not a Tiffin fan, so I'll pass on this
3. is tiffin a quality product, we looked at it and it looks very good
- Some love 'em others don't - Most however, say the factory support is WELL above average
- Most Phaetons I've seen are rear radiator, so I wouldn't purchase one unless the radiator is one the side
- The do look very clean inside. They generally have a clean, neat, look
4. what kind of a discount from list can we expect to get
- popular or not, most seem to average as much as 25 to 28% off list - I don't think they are selling THAT many these days - ask for bids from all dealers within a 2 hour drive, if for no other reason than leverage with the one you really want to deal with (but be prepared to buy from another)
The 360 Cummins has more than enough power. I have been very happy with the performance of mine and I have a 40'. The 36QSH is a nice floor plan with a mid-coach t.v. About the only thing I didn't like about it was the bedroom sink. We also liked the large garden tub in the 40QSH. I'm 6'2" so the large shower was a plus.
Overall, I believe the Phaeton is tough to beat for the money. You should not have a problem obtaining 26-28% off MSRP. Try Bankston in Al., Sherman in Miss., and Kings Campers in Wi. I think you will find the discount you are looking for. For the small difference in price, I would also consider the 40' models as well. We absolutely love our 40QSH.
