I'm always receiving scare emails from friends. Since I don't always believe everything I read and I wouldn't pass it along unless it was true, I first go to www. Snopes.com. I think they are reliable and not working for any special interest group. How do the rest of you feel about this web site?

I like Snopes and also truthorfiction.

With the junk floating around on emails it's nice to have a source of decent information for rumor control.

I used Snopes twice yesterday to "educate" someone in my own family!

I have to wonder, who checks Snopes for accuracy? Sure, they have an excellent reputation, but are they perfect? What if they are wrong?
I guess I am just not very trusting.

Noone, and no website, is 'perfect'; however, imo, Snopes and a few other similar websites sure beat most individual 'personal opinion'. You can look at the bottom of your inquiry and see where they get their information; they do put considerable research in their postings.

Do you have an example?

I'm sure they are not perfect, but I don't know of a place I'd trust more for accurate information. If there is one...I'd like to hear about it.

How does an information site pull a scam?
A scam is defined as a confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit or a swindle.
As far as I know Snopes is just a place to find information.

I am also a Snopes fan. I often use it to educate my wife who will pass on anything that is sent to her via email.

I never pass on that junk that people forward to you.

Well... Then some days you just do the research
For example there is the following letter which I'll type out in part (complete with comments)

Hello, My name is Dave Rhodes (There really was a Dave Rhodes)
And two years ago I was broke (More like 32 years now but true when written)
Today I live in a Fine Big House (THE BIG HOUSE... Prison)
I have a chauffer (Prisoner transport driver) and a limo (Transport van)
I don't have to worry about where my next meal is coming from (Prison Mess)

Well.. you get the picture. Dave may be out now. It's been long enough

I once read that letter, using a slightly different voice for the comments. to a local postal inspector....Poor gal. I don't think she was used to lauging that hard. She figured out I was not falling for the scam.

About once a year I send out a mass e-mail asking everyone to please not forward anything to my unless they think I will find it especially interesting or funny.I forward almost nothing and don't spend time checking things out. I don't know why people feel the need to forward all of this stuff to everyone they know.
