While camping at Holland State Park in Michigan over the weekend, some severe weather moved in from over Lake Michigan. Local news indicated water spouts and tornados possible, and anyone not in a "sturdy structure, mobile homes, or campers" should seek sturdier shelter. Warning was to expire in an hour or so. DW and I (ok, mostly I) decided to move inland a little, and complete some shopping. While in the store, torrential downpour began. Driving back to the park was interesting, as roads began to flood. Result was 5-6 inches of rain overnight, and almost constant lightning from around 9 pm until sometime in the early morning hours. I pulled in the slides and we turtled for the night, which was not too restful. My question, when severe weather warnings are posted while you're camping, do you seek alternate structure or ride it out?

If a tornado is forcasted, we seek alternative "hiding places". We would NEVER ride out a tornado in a MH!!! Ever watch the wizard of oz??

If you are told to seek better shelter, then I definately would.

If a Tornado Warning for the area is issued, the best thing is to find a secure shelter.

Take a look at this thread: http://www.rv.net/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/21515927.cfm and you'll see what happens to campgrounds when there are tornado warnings . . .

Best advice -- seek shelter IMMEDIATELY!

If there's a tornado watch/warning for the county I'm in, I'll be seeking the nearest basement.

If its just a super-cell thunderstorm, I'll pass it in the camper. The last one of those I experienced was while I was in Chicago when one rolled in off lake michigan. Thunder sounds really metallic when you're amongst a bunch of skyscrappers. Drove the 60 miles south in that weather with the lightning and flooded roads using Semis as a guide to where the bloody lanes were. Passed alot of folks taking shelter under the overpasses.

If there was the threat of a tornado, I would find a sturdy sturcture. If just heavy rain, I would ride it out.

I sometimes go to lunch at a place called "Ripples on the lake" on M-59 south of Pontiac Lake, in White Lake Twp.

That area got twisted last night.. Thousands out of power and I don't know what else.

I'm fairly safe from all but the worst storms here in Detroit..Only once in the 30 years I've been here have storms penetrated into the city and that time was no where near me. However with the exodus of manufacturing to over seas.

That could change

Please Please do not try to ride them out in your RV. Here in Oklahoma, on each instruction or rule sheet you get when you check in, it is listed where to go in case of threatening weather. It will also have local radio and tv stations listed. If for some reason you do not get any info ask for it when checking in.

Tornadoes are nothing to mess with, they will almost always win.

A good weather radio is a must have too.

Not too hard, even without a forecast, to tell if conditions might prove to be conducive to tornados or strong storms. If it seems to us that that scenario might become possible, we ask at the office where their storm shelter is and if they don't have one, where they recommend we go if there are tornado watches. If staff are teeny boppers or similar and don't have a clue, we will check with other businesses, chamber of commerce, city hall etc. for recommendations. Staying in a RV is not an option for us and waiting till the last minute to find a suitable shelter isn't smart.
