I also went from a ST225/75R15D to a LT225/75R16E with aluminum wheel. I went with B F Goodrich Commercial TA's. They are only one inch taller than what you have now. That will make them one half inch closer to your wheel wells and one inch closer from tire to tire. 8,000 miles since upgrade and it was money well spent.

Thats a BIG 10-4!. Exactly what I did, I couldnt go with any bigger tire due to clearance on the RV. You ride down the road with confidence. I learned the hard way, brand new 2006 fifth wheel and 10,000 miles later, 2 blow-ots and $1500.00 worth of damage to the side of the fiver.
No matter what tires you have, here are some must do's....

1) never apply petroleum tire cleaner products,( petroleum eats away at the rubber)
2)Keep tires covered when in storage
3)Keep inflated to proper psi, (most common cause of blow-outs is under inflation)

I will close the gap between the rotating tires on each side from 4.5 inches to 1.1 inches.

Would this cause any problems??

Our unit is just a little larger than yours and probably similar in weight, etc. The stock tires on it were already on 16" rims; last year we replaced the tires with Goodyear Wrangler HT LT235/85-16R's. The distance between the tires is about 1.25 inches. So far, so good.

Great info. Thanks for all the responses. I am now leaning towards Michelin XPS 245/75/16LE because my local Costco can get them for $220 each and they have the right specs.
I would like to go with aluminum wheels - but NOT Chinese. I am trying to educate myself on the internet.
Thanks eveyone, Gary

I just ordered the 5 spoke, series 04 - even though I like the series 06 (your's) better. But the 5 spoke wheels match my Dodge 5 spoke alloys better.

I am planning on buying the BFG Commercial T/A's (235/85/16LE) from Costco because of price and North America warranty purposes. The height (31.4"), is a little shorter than the XPS (32") So, I feel more comfortable moving to 31.4 from 28.3 than 32. I'm cocrned about the gap between tandem tires.

The above combination fits perfectly and they make the 5th wheel look like new again!

Repacked the wheel bearings while I was at it.
One wheel had a full "2 turns of the axle nut" play.

What are those 4" stiff thin plastic rings that go over the hub behind the old wheels? Kind of like a ridgid elastic.

Thanks to everyone for making this a really successful upgrade.
