We have a 2005 GMC Extra Cab 3500 dual wheel Duramax. We are thinking about purchasing a 2005 Heartland Landmark 5th wheel which is designed to tow with a short bed truck. Is there a problem if we tow it with a long bed truck? I measured a long bed and a short bed and the distance from the tail gates to the middle of the rear axel is almost the same. The difference in length between a short & long is in front of the rear axle not behind it. Am I correct in assuming the Landmark 5th wheel can be towed with no problem at all with a long bed truck? Thanks

You won't have any problem. Heartland builds thier trailers with extra cab clearence for short beds. With your long bed you'll yust have that much more room.Mark.

LONG BOX can pull ANY 5th wheel design. (notice I stated "Design", not weight) Lots of room for bikes, generator, tool box, wood, etc. Many manufactures have designed "Short Box" friendly designs as over 1/2 of the truck market is short boxes. Short box owners need to be aware of design features or purchase a slider hitch. Randy

I prefer the long bed truck since the fulcrum for movement is better in the longer bed. That means the trailer wont whip it around so much especially in windy conditions. You will be fine.

I've towed 5th wheels with both long and short beds and prefer the extra stability of the long bed. You will have no issues with that 5th wheel, especially with a dually long bed. That's a nice 5th wheel BTW.

LOL. Never thought I'd hear the day when someone would ask if a longbed can tow something! Of course it can!

I like the room in my longbed and never owned a shortbed but if you ever want to install a fuel tank or carry cargo then a shortbed might be a problem.

We tow a Heartland Bighorn with a long bed. Not only a long bed, but a pullrite slider hitch to boot. We had the hitch before the truck and it simply was too good a hitch to give up. Factory helped set us up with brackets. Probably upgrade the truck in the future, but will keep the hitch as we may go to a SB. Easy to back into sites with the LB.

The only downside to a longbed is when you're NOT towing. It takes up a lot of room in parking lots, particularly ones that have narrow aisles.

I don't think that is a correct statement, you are obviously comparing one style or same style of trucks, or you need to elaborate on what you mean . Short bed versuses long bed crew cab yes, short bed versuses long bed if the short bed is a crew cab and the long bed is a extended cab then its probably sixes, if the short bed is a crew cab and the long bed is a standard cab then the short bed has the advantage on fulcrum as it is a longer truck from the center of the rear axles foward. So its not always fair to make these statements without explaination . If people are not well versed in this short bed long bed issue when it comes to towing they would think all short beds have a disadvantage, and that is not true.
