Once while going into a Burger King in Bossier City, La. I heard a terrible racket. Turned around to see an extension ladder sliding down the street that had fallen out of a pickup. Before the driver could get stopped and before I could get to it to get it out of the road a driver headed in the other direction picked it up and took off.The owner turned around and was in hot pursuit the last time I saw them.I hope he got it back.

Years ago I was on a detachment to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. On the way to the base one morning we got tied up in traffic. It turned out that a car had a flat tire while crossing a very short, less than 100 ft, bridge crossing a small stream. The driver stopped on the bridge to change the tire and was struck and killed. When we passed there were many police and other official vehicles there with the body, in a body bag. The interesting part that when we came back 4 hours later all of the police and other vehicles were gone but the body, in the body bag was still there. It turned out that the bridge divided two jurisdictions and neither wanted to take responsibility. I don't know how it was resolved but when we went back several hours later it was gone. I often wondered if a passerby had decided to open the bag to see what was inside.

I don't. I ran over one of those on the freeway with a motorcycle. To this day I don't know why I didn't go down. That was the hardest impact I have ever felt. Loosing part of your load like that is very dangerous. Those who fail to properly secure their load should be held completely responsible for the problems they cause. Loosing the ladder is a small price to pay.

Can you tell that extension ladders in the roadway are a sore sport with me?!?

Over the years, I've seen and had some "doozies".

On the 7 to Long Beach (yup, I still think of it as the 7) going to work, I saw these cool 'saucers' flying all over the place. It was Bott Dots being popped off the ground by a fork truck that had fallen off a trailer and was skidding down the road! Those Bott Dots are hard rocks and luckily I didn't catch one, a few cars lost a windshield and got dented.

A bucket fell off a pickup truck in front of me. Didn't have anywhere to go with cars on both sides of me so I hit it. Darned thing must've been full of dried cement or plaster, it caused $3k worth of damage!!!

A buddy was on a construction crew. They had an ultra large, heavily loaded trailer in tow. Coming down the grapevine towards Bakersfield, the driver nudged the passenger and says "hey, they've got a trailer just like ou.........!!!!!!!" Y'know, he sped up, let the trailer nudge into them and gently steered the whole mess to the side of the road!

I was carrying thousands of dollars of decking material for our deck construction up the mountain. I had SIX ratched binders on the load of 20' sticks. The stuff is slick as snot on each other, has the coefficient of friction of grease on a polished doorknob. It was late at night and at a stop sign, nearly home, a neighbor pulled up next to me (I was driving slowly) and said I was losing "some" lumber. I pulled over and almost threw up. Half the load had sought freedom. It was spread for miles. Luckily, only eight of the $29 a stick decking had been damaged badly enough to need replacing.

I saw a plumbing truck stop at a stopsign on a four way stop in front of me one day. What seemed like a mile and a half of PVC shot off his top rack! I helped him pick it all up. What a mess!

Egads.

The Stanley Cup was left on the side of the road when a team's bus broke down and they had to switch to another bus. They did manage to retrieve it.
