American Heritage in Williamsburg is pretty close to all the attractions.

If you posted your interests (civil war history buff, etc.) it might be easier to give you campgrounds fitting your needs.

I am glad you posted as I just realized that I meant western VA campgrounds. Got my east and west turned around!

Heck, Between Cooter Brown's, the Sports Nut, and 'Dega just down the road, I'd stay right in Anniston!!

In VA, we've stayed in Pochohantas SP, just south of Richmond, and Lake Fairfax CG, just outside of DC. Both were nice.

Look into Newport News City Park. It is between Williamsburg and Norfolk. Nice park with large, spacious sites. American Heritage is nice but expensive.

I just read your correction. Never mind..

Oh, I was ready to load you a list of Va Beach and Williamsburg campgrounds... Out west end of the state huh? I've been to a few, but like Sherando Lake USFS campground the best, not much for hook-up's though - electric only!

And the very best campground out that way would have to be Goose Point Park which is an Army COE campground with some GREAT waterfont sites in Loop-C (all water & electric in that loop), check out their interactive map HERE and look at sites 17 & 18, can't go wrong there! Not too far north & west of Martinsville... park entrance is right beside Fairystone State Park...

Fire Instructor, sounds like you have been in my neck of the woods before. What were you doing that far south? Don't you know the language is different down here and you need a translator?

Took some training at the base two years ago. Most evenings we'd find a designated driver, and then we hit all the local eateries and watering holes.

Friday morning I drove down to 'Dega and toured the Racing Museum and then back to Atlanta for the flight home...

I figure that sometime in the next few years I'll make a camping loop through that area. I can taste the bar-b-q ribs already!
