In my earlier post I got my directions mixed up and said I nneded advice on Eastern VA campgrounds when I actually meant western around the Shanandoah valley upper and lower parkway. thanks
If you have kids we stayed at the Natural Bridge Yogi last year, very nice campground. There is a drive through safari nearby that is a must do if in this area - we opted for the wagon ride though
My uncles and cousins love to go over to Matthews Arm or one of the other NPS parks - I can't do without hookups so I've never tried any of them but they all keep returning so they must be nice.
2 years ago friends stayed at Walnut Hills Campground in Stauton and loved it there.
Luray:
Luray RV Resort Country Waye - really good reviews I'm sure the prices are high.
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Luray - It is a yogi bear, nuf said
Front Royal:
Front Royal RV Campground - not great ratings, used to be a KOA now not.
North Forks Resort - not great ratings, near a river
Shenandoah National Park - Big Meadows Campground - No Hook ups but in a national park, it does not get any better than this for views and beauty. And the price is pretty reasonable too -I have stayed there before and it is quite nice. But you boondock.
Shenandoah NP - Mathews Arm Campground - Similar to Big Meadows, no Hook-ups but great views.
Skyline Ranch Resort - is a Coast to Coast
Winchester:
Candy Hill Campground - mixed reviews depending on who comes in there. I found it pleasant with rules to be followed. They have a great pool and the bathrooms are very clean. I consider it a "suburban/city" type of campground - easy on easy off the highway, safe, with some country mixed in.
I do not know about any other parks further down the skyline drive area but it all depends on what you are looking for.
I am not sure what you mean by upper and lower parkway--maybe Shenandoah NP is upper and Blue Ridge Parkway is lower??? The Blue Ridge Parkway has campgrounds that are very nice, but have no hookups. The Northernmost is Otter Creek at mile post 60, then Peaks of Otter at mile post 85. The Parkway is a beautiful drive. There is still some rhododendron at higher elevations.

Just 1 mile off the parkway, at the mile post 60 (Otter Creek)is Wildwood Campground. A very friendly place with great owners. Prices are reasonable too.
