Went to the storage area today to get the empty propane tanks off my trailer for refill and found my battery trays open and the batterys half disconnected. Also found a note that said, "sorry, I was looking for 12V batteries". Mine are six volt.

Your experience reminded me of an urban (or boondock) legend I have heard a few times that centered around an older couple that had always dreamed of retiring into a MH and travelling around the country in the first chapter of their retirement.
Well, as fate would have it, their financial portfolio precluded them from purchasing the MH of their dreams but the couple were not ready to give up. They came up with the idea of procuring an old school bus and converting it into a wheeled palace. This actually worked out quite well as this gentleman was rather handy and it also allowed him and his wife the opportunity to spend time together working on this labor of love.
As the completion of this project drew near, they did take it out for a bit of a test run and were a quite dismayed at the fuel this old bus consumed. As a matter of fact, he was quite certain that there was 1" garden house running from the gas tank to the carburetor.
Again, in the face of adversity, innovation prevailed and they decided that going with propane would solve two problems. One, it would improve the costs associated with fuel and moving down the road, and secondly, the now obsolete large gas tanks would provide ideal storage for the grey and septic systems.
Fast forward another six months and the final project surpassed their expectations!
This fella and his wife are now realizing their dream and travelling across the country. One particular day, they return to their campsite only to find that it has been disturbed and some items have been taken. Upon further investigation, they discover that someone has pried open one of the gas caps and lying beside six feet of garden hose is a rather large quantity of blue vomit!
Suffice to say that the guy with the blue lips will think twice before stealing gas from that particular MH!
CAlGARYMEDIC,
I have heard this "story" numerous times but never the part about using the gas tank as a holding tank. I had always wondered how someone could be so stupid as to try to to suck gas from a black tank valve. It makes for a better story this way....
I guess it was nice of that person(s) to leave a note...I guess... It's one of those situations where you just don't know what to say.

Maybe they just wanted to borrow a 12 volter to get tongue jack to work, or RV to start? We'll never know, but it might NOT have been crooks. Did storage lot report a theft of a 12 volter?

This might be the correct answer. My trailer is stored in a conventional storage area and only has room for two trailers. The other was gone on a trip. I reported my event to the manager today and he said he did have to give someone a jumpstart yesterday.
Our T.T. is in our back yard, except when we are leaving soon on a trip. I have a lite chain and padlock around my battery box. I know it wouldn't stop a determined theif but it would slow them down. At least long enough for Mr. Smith and Wessson to show up. Several years ago some #@%&^%$# stole the battery out of my pickup on Xmas eve, because I neglected to lock the truck.
We just returned from a few days in Biloxi, Mi. The CG we stayed at had FEMA people still there. The next to the last day there I seen one of the perm residents changing his propane tanks. He had them chained down, and I noticed all the perms did also. I am going to chain mine also, the cost of fuel is driving an increase in fuel thefts.
It was not a good trip, but we had fun at the casinos and only left them about $100. Not bad for 4 days of fun. The CG was the only one available, but I understand the fema folks are being moved out soon. Rt 90 thru town is under cons't and an awful mess. We will not be going back there for some time to come.
