I'll be coming up from southern Utah and Mapquest would have me go out I-80 from Salt Lake up 16, 30 and 89 through Cokeville and Smoot instead of up 15 through Idaho Falls. Says it is 100 miles shorter or 10 gallons shorter. Is this route Ok? I'll be pulling a 21 ft TT.
Oh and it includes bypassing Salt Lake by taking the 189 out of Provo.

I've made that drive many times, it's not my favorite route to Jackson but it's pretty fast. Pulling a trailer would present no problem. Idaho Falls would be a much longer route.

The only advantages of bypassing Salt Lake City are that you avoid a construction zone and also avoid going over Parley's Canyon, a grueling sustained climb.

Eurocamper has it right.....I always go this way. Closer and more scenic especially thru Star Valley. If you need a nice overnighter try the park below in the review in Thayne, Wy.

Star Valley is indeed beautiful, and one of my favorite parts of the drive. It's just the drive from Salt Lake to Evanston, and from Evanston to Geneva that I don't care for — scenery too blah, too many semi trucks.

It takes a little longer, but I much prefer Hwy. 89 through Logan Canyon and past Bear Lake.

You are right once again Ron, especially in the fall with all the Aspens turning. But I'm usually coming thru from Moab and don't want to travel thru SLC so go the Provo Canyon way and just tough it out. ha ha

Going through Logan is 19 miles longer. I think maybe a better choice if it has more freeway and is a prettier drive to boot. I would think the extra 20 min. would be more then made up by driving less 2 lane road.

The Logan route may be 19 miles longer, I've never figured it out...but probably slower, as you'll go thru SLC, Ogden (construction) and Logan, then up and over the scenic part. (The stretch from Provo to SLC can be a PITA.) And probably less freeway overall. On your original route you'll have Provo, Heber City and Evanston (easy) to get through and except for a short stretch thru Provo Canyon, freeway all the way to Evanston. I start from Park City and always take the Starr Valley route...maybe just habit but it seems easier. Pretty close to sixes probably. Whatever construction there is may be the determining factor and you'll probably have to research that part.

Mapquest has me taking 189 all the way through Provo, is that way pretty slow and I should stay on the freeway and take 52 across and catch 189 later?

No 52. Stick to 189 (University Avenue). It's a straight shot thru Provo, maybe a dozen lights or so, right by BYU's Cougar stadium. 52 will get you into a bunch of traffic.
