We are new to the RV lifestyle. We usually use our 31' Gulfstream BT Cruiser relatively close to home, going to State Parks and campgrounds that we know. We recently traveled from Omaha, NE to Vail, CO and had so much fun that we are heading out again, this time from Omaha to McCall, ID. When we traveled to Vail, we pulled off the road to catch a few hours of sleep at a Travel Center of America. On the next trip I will have my mother with me (and my 3 and 5 year old kids), who may like a "safe spot" to catch some sleep. Is there a website where I can look up places to stay along our journey? It's going to be a 24 hour trip of driving and we are looking to stop at least for 1 night. Thank you,
-Carmen

Welcome to the forum and to RVing!
There are many ways to locate a campground. Many of us own a CD or printed directory.
There are numerous websites that have listings as well as state and local directories.
Go to Google or yahoo and type in Campgrounds and RV Parks and you will find many.
I often use a combination of resources including the directories, online websites and yahoo yellow pages.
I often know approximately where we might need a spot for the night and so have a list of places ready. We rarely make reservations ahead of time for an overnight spot because we never know exactly where or when we will be ready to stop for the evening.
This forum also has a campgrounds section and I also use RVParkReviews.com to find out what others have learned about a particular park.

Also buy yourself a copy of the Trailer Life Directory, can be purchased at Camping World or Barnes and Nobel. www.rvparkreviews.com is also a good source with comments from folks that have actually stayed there. You can also stay at Wal-Mart, there is protocol - do a search here for Wal-Mart and you will get a host of information. Have Fun

I plan all our camping trips and I use rvparkreviews.com and reserveamerica.com. I love getting the reviews from other campers and usually they are spot on, but sometimes you have to read between the lines(some people do not like anything). We have the Woodall book, but I never use it, because I like the Internet better. Whenever I find something that looks promising I always run it through here also. Welcome to Rving and Happy Camping

although I hate to recommend any MS product, in streets and trips you can enter a location and see campgrounds within XX miles.

To use any website while you are traveling, you are have to have a computer. Others have suggested the Trailerlife CD but that won't tell you exactly where you are relative to the campgrounds but Delorme's Street Atlas will. The nice part is that you don't have to have web access to use it.
Using Street Atlas, you can activate the GPS feature and know exactly where you are on a map. Using Points of Interest files, you can activate only what you need - COE campgrounds, wifi campgrounds, National parks, State parks (by State), Wal-Marts (including a file where overnight parking is prohibited). You can then instantly plot a trip from your current position to the destination you select and get turn by turn verbal driving directions to get you there. I'd admit that finding a place to put the laptop in your RV might be challenging but we do it in our toad and think it is worth it.

I use the Trailer Life RV Park Directory and also google RV Park "city state". RVParkreviews.com as noted above is a good reference also.

We purchased a book called "the next exit". It has been very helpful. It tells you what is at the next exit so you can make a decision on if you want to stop or not. It list campgrounds also.
Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for the welcome and the great advice on finding a campground. We spent so much time (not to mention $$$) finding the RV we wanted and stocking it, that we sort of forgot to figure out where to go! HA. Thanks again to everyone who responded. We are looking forward to our cross country trip to Idaho. Too many tornados in Nebraska...it will be nice to get out of town.
