Saving taxes has nothing to do with registration. It has to do with where you take delivery of the RV. If you buy and take delivery in your state, then you pay sales tax.

it has every thing to do with the registration, not where you buy it. When I bought a vehicle out of state, no tax was charged in that state but I had to pay the fees when I registered it in my home state.

Not here in Ca. Paying sales tax is determined when the vehicle is first sold and where it is sold and where delivery is taken. That's why dealerships will drive a MH into Arizona or Oregon to deliver the coach to a customer that has residence in Ca. May be different in Va.

OK, technically I don't think we pay sales tax on vehicles out here. it is a vehicle registration tax instead so that may be the difference. I know when I bought a riding mower in NC and had it delivered to my address in VA, I was not charged NC tax.
But California is a special case, or so I have heard.
When I bought a boat trailer in VA I registered it in MD and avoided the annual personal property tax that VA had.

Yes, the rules vary according to what State you live in, and what state you made the purchase in.
I bought my truck in California. The dealer said he was forbidden by law to give me the paperwork so I could title it in Montana, I HAD to pay the sales tax in CA, and the dealer HAD to register the truck in CA. Even after I registered and titled the truck in Montana, the State of California sent me a nasty gram saying I had BETTER renew the registration on the truck, or pay to have it put in "non-operational" status, or be liable to all kinds of fines and fees. I threw it away and ignored them.
So, as it is with ALL legal issues, "IT DEPENDS..."

But...how do they register it in CA if you dont LIVE in CA? What address do they use??? Lets say you live in AZ and your out and about over the border and stumble upon an "offer you cant refuse"...

In 2000, we bought a Excursion Diesel in NC, but we live in GA. We didn't pay tax on it because the dealer said we didn't have to. We traded that vehicle in a couple of years later on a truck, but we got a calling card from the IRS LAST YEAR charging us the taxes on that vehicle, which we had to pay (plus late penalties, of course). Beware....

Some states are more revenue-hungry than others and Calif seems to be at the top of the list, regardless of whether one lives there or not... Likely, they just went ahead and used the out-of-state home address.

California has auditors that they send all over the country looking for individuals who bought goods in the state but did not pay the sales tax. They use to do the same thing with income tax until the Supreme Court outlawed it. If you earned income in California and then retired and moved out of state, California still wanted you to pay income tax on your pension income.
