I carry one in the RV. We have small children with us as well. I keep it in a fast acting safe. If the kids get near the safe and try the combination the safe beeps loudly until I disable it. Better prepared than not. I will protect my family against any bad guy or critter. Also, educate children about the dangers of a gun. If they know about them (not necessarily the location) the less curious they will be and they will be smarter around them. Everyone should be educated about guns. It would be very unfortunate to be in a position that your family is in some sort of danger an you are ill equipped to help/protect them.

I carry my small "horse" when I am out. However, I am qualified under the new homeland security regulations, so I don't worry about where I am going, except Canada. Having said that, I agree with flalawdawg about first qualifying with the weapon you plan on taking as well as having a CCW permit. There are some states that will not recognize your permit and you need to read up on the laws in the states you are going through.
Do you need a CCW for a weapon in an RV? I'm not sure, but if you check the laws in your state, you should be able to find out.

Why carry a weapon in the RV? It kinda worries me that we seem to be trying to arm ourselves to the teeth and yet I rarely ever hear of anyone being threatened by someone. My nephew called my yesterday to tell me that he got a CCW permit in his hometown in Montana. I asked why he needed a CCW and he said it was protection for bears! He plans on carrying a .50 cal handgun. I asked why he needed to conceal it if he is out in the woods. He didn't have an answer for that one.
What I worry about is someone who is not qualified to handle a weapon using it when it should not have been used. A cop's nightmare is responding to a possible prowler call and being shot by the homeowner who was scared and armed.
I am not a bleeding liberal, just a retired cop who worries about people with guns that think they are protecting themselves from perceived threats and become a threat themselves or do something foolish that takes an innocent person's life. Remember, you can't call that bullet back once you have fired the weapon.

Think about it: When was the last time YOU PERSONALLY had someone physically threaten you in your RV? I don't wanna hear about uncle charlies second cousins friend who got jumped by wild campers. Can YOU point out a legitmate threat? Statistics do say that while there may be a very occasional problem, it is extreemly rare.
Don't overreact.

Thanks. I guess I needed to be reminded why I am nervous about camping in the States. Think I'll stay camping in Canada. Never seen a need for a gun and want to keep it that way!

Having guns and no bullets is like having a car and no engine. By itself it is useless.

I think everyone should take a gun safety course before they can get a permit. Being prior military, having taken a ARA training course I and my wife have concealed permits. Sometimes I have one on my person sometimes it may be nearby but I do have access and pray I never need to use it. I have no qualms about taking a life that has no respect for me or my families life, I can live with doing what needs doing.

I'm not the worried type of man but we do keep our door locked at night.I am not looking for someone to break the lock and enter as that would be a terrible mistake.

Two things.
First off...You don't need a CCW for a long gun and their is nothing more intimidating than the "sliding slam" of a good 12gague. Any good gun safty course should be fine for those intersted in long guns. I own a few hand guns myself but if a problem arose the long gun would be out first...

Second...get your hands on a book called death in the canyon...My DW got it at the grand canyon last year...their are documented cases of armed abduction, theft and kidnapping in the grand canyon area...I don't think these are isolated....Morons find easy targets (lets face it when were on vacation our guard is down) and they will go for them until they are stopped or it becomes two difficult for them.

Thank you for your work as an office...It is good to know people like you have my back if I can not handle it. I was raised that your first line of defense is yourself....Who else can you really trust?

have some at home never needed one yet, unless im planning on boondocking i dont carry one,i prefer carrying a short light rifle like a carbine when out of state you would get in less trouble if they wanted to push there laws, have a ccw permit from the state but not all the states will except it.have never been in a place i needed one if a place doesnt feel or look right i pass it by.
