The best testimony for any LEO that is retired is that they retired with no holes. I did and wish that for all of them.

But as to the topic, only the OP can decide what is best for them and IF they really want to have one in their RV. Many states consider the RV to be "HOME" on the road but you have to know if that changes when in motion. If you have given no "grief" to the officer when stopped, I do not see how they would have to or want to know what is in the RV. At either the northern or southern border is another thing. Do NOT have an undeclared firearm with you or the consequences can or will be dire. And as someone mentioned already, COMMON SENSE is a major factor when dealing with or having a firearm!

Keep this thread civil and it remains open.

DH and I are both LE officers in Wisconsin. I agree with most of the posts on this thread that refer to training with a firearm. Just remember that LE officers train several times a year to keep fresh and under high stress situations mistakes can be made by any party involved. I know that if I get a call and come across anyone with a firearm in their hands, (yes this means at a campsite) I am going to think you are the bad guy until I find out otherwise. Protect and serve is correct, but me going home safe is my number 1 priority.

Hopefully some of you will make it up to our neck of the woods, the camping is great. If I ever meet you on a traffic stop or "wherever" all I would ask is that you tell me if you have a firearm; especially if it is in your vehicle. If you are not a convicted felon, the gun isn't stolen and you have it cased properly... you've got nothing to hide.

Stay safe

I carry. Completed CHL (Concealed Handgun License) training in February 08. Recieved my License in May 08.
In Texas, "effective 9/1/2007, a person who can legally possess a firearm may possess or carry a handgun in a motor vehicle(including an RV with living quarters) that is owned by or under the lawful control of the person. However, the firearm must be concealed."

Amen. I have absolutely nothing against law abiding citizens having guns in their RV's or TV's. All I ask is that you let me know it's there. By the way, in New Mexico your TV or RV is considered an extension of your home and you can have a loaded concealed firearm in either one. Just let the officer know it's there but please don't pick it up to show him/her.....

Will driving an old MH lessen your chance of needing a gun to keep others out?

I really have no desire to take my family into an environment that would require a gun to feel safety BUT how is a stranger in a strange place going to know there are bad people there?

I mean does anyone have a real story about needing a gun because there was no other way to get out of the situation? Hey I had rather run then bleed any day.

this is a very disturbing thread. RV parks are public places, and I would not want to camp with my kids next to someone having a gun inside their RV. It is one thing to have a gun locked inside your house, and it is different to have one separated from the public by a couple of inches of fiberglass and cardboard. All of you gun lovers, note that there is no other civilized country in the world where folks can buy and carry guns. Interestingly, these countries do not suffer from burglaries and murders any more than us. We have more kids without health insurance here than families without guns. That is scary.

Edited to remove the political references. They STILL are not allowed!

Statistically, you are more likely to be victimized stopping to get fuel,or, something to eat, while in route to camping, than at the actual campground.
If I carried a gun, I would think that immediate access in those circumstances would be best.
Locked away in the RV wouldn't help much.

My wife found a door alarm that goes on the door frame that we turn on at night and man is it loud. It would probably scare the sh-- out of anybody trying to break in. But yes there is a pistol in the camp site some where every time we go.

Disturbing? Then, obviously, you are better off not knowing, and you should not have read this thread.
No other civilized contry? Switzerland comes immediately to mind. I have read that the British Bobbies have started to carry in some areas due to the "uncivilized" folks that have arrived on their shores.
Health insurance is not a Constitutional right. The right to keep and bear arms IS.
