Hi...I have read previous posts about the Champion generators but I still have a question, since almost everyone who has one is happy with it. I have the opportunity to purchase a Champion 3000 Watt (4000 peak) generator for $399.99 CAD. It is advertised as running at 68 db...only 8 db more than conversation. Some of the posts I've read seem to indicate that they are loud. Can I believe the advertising on this new unit? Is it a good deal?
Thanks!

Hondas and Yamahas at idle run 58db. Understand each 3db increase represents a doubling of the sound level. 67db is therefore EIGHT times louder than 58. 68 is a bit louder than that.
You will not be popular if you run that unit in a campground or close to other campers. On your own, no problem.

What is considered to be an acceptable decibel level in a campground when it comes to generators?

You will not be popular if you take it out in a campground. Even if you never start it. You will be creating too much noise. I believe that most of the noise will come from people that wish they had never been sold and are in love with the colors red or blue and hate yellow. They are not as quiet as the Honda or Yamaha generators, but they are quieter than the normal "Contractor" type of generator. I have a Champion and a "Contractor" and the Champion is quieter than the Contractor. The Champion is NOT as quiet as the Honda or Yamaha. It is within the requirements of the Forest Service so I don't care.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

My hopes are you will find the answer to your questions. Generator thread tend to be 'mine is better that yours" Yes most folks who post about their experience of owning a Champion is positive, with the exception of those who are not happy with the sound level. Some say 'it's no big deal' Other say 'I don't want to be within 100' of someone running one of those loud buggers. Well, I own one and say "It's not much louder than some factory installed gensets" On the 3000w Chinese gensets info' thread it's be discussed how to perhaps lower the sound level. Maybe you will buy a Champion and join the CCC's the 'Champion Cheering Club' and then help us figure a way to lower the sound. It's possible. Or~maybe 68 dBA will be ok for you. The Champion is a true value.

Thanks for that humorous touch, Doug I know generators are a touchy subject. Chances are that I would never use it in a private campground...why, when I'm paying for full hook-ups? Off the beaten path, however, it may be useful. I haven't even decided if I need one yet...the ad makes it look like I should have one, and it's much more affordable than Honda around here, so I wanted some feedback on whether 68db is good or not.

At Tractor Supply they have a Champion 3500 watt generator for
$299.99 , when I stay in a RV park I hook my shore cord to the
electric and use their electric , when I am boon docking is when the
generator is used, if you get to close to me while boon docking don't
complain if my generator is to loud,

If your not going to run it around others by all means buy it. IMHO, it will be money well spent. As far as the noise is conserned, if we're running our air inside, we can't hear the generator so it doesn't bother us at all.
The $399 seems to be a normal price for the unit when it is not on sall. There may be others like Tractor Supply that price it at $299, but if they are not in close proximity the extra $100 will pretty much even out shipping or fuel costs. Plus, if you purchase locally one would expect more convenient service if needed.

the state parks here have a 2hr time in the late morning and 2hrs in the early evening that you are allowed to run them they have to have a forest approved muffler other then that they dont list any db rateing it must have .there all annoying in a quite park no matter how quite they are.but you have to do it sometimes to charge batterys .bigger battery bank and some solar cuts down on running them except for AC ,we try to find full hooks when we can and not run one.

Popular misconception. 3dB is NOT twice as loud, 10dB is. A 3dB increase takes twice as much wattage from an amplifier (in the audio world).
I have an Eliminator Generator (same as a Champion except the paint color). It is not silent by any means, but it is not "loud" in my mind, but obviously this is subjective. My previous generator was powered by a Briggs and Stratton 8hp, and it was LOUD. I have heard a Honda 3000w eu unit, and they are quiet (unless running at max power). The Champion/Eliminator is about the same as the Honda or a Yamaha at full tilt (not in eco mode).
For example, I wouldn't use my generator all night in a campground, but I don't hesitate to use it during the day for a few hours at a time. It certainly isn't objectionable.
As a side note, I've had mine for 4 years now, and it still starts on the first or second pull in the spring when I dig it out of storage. It has been very reliable. It does use a little oil when under heavy load in hot weather.
Great buy. Check out Costco - I saw them for $299 CDN there.
