Thanks to all of you who responded to my last request so quickly. I have another question. Those of you who pull a toad, can you tell me some of the sightseeing places that you visited that would have been difficult, if not impossible, to get to without a toad? And, do you think there might have been a place around that site close enough to rent a vehicle?

You won't rent a vehicle like mine anywhere...And yes there has been places that I could not get to with the RV....We use ours for off roading....My "TOAD" is a lifted Suzuki Samurai with a Tracker 16valve engine, 16 in tires and 5000# winch. The DW has gotten use to having it... especially after our motorhome sunk into a soft camp sight and was stuck...we used the winch and a near by tree to pull the RV out ourselves...She says it is her little life saver after her friend said they paid over 500 to get theirs out....
OH we don't go to that camp sight any more
But you never know what you run into

I realy haven't used my toad to get into any camping site. I use my toad to touring, shoping, and visiting friends that might live with in a days drive distance.
Most places I have been, I could have rented a car. Waited for the deliever it or take a cab to get to the car rental (both ways). Bill

A few places that I can think of that one can't CONVENIENTLY get to in a big MH (these are all on the road system):
- McCarthy/Kennecott
- Matanuska Glacier
- Exit Glacier (IIRC, it's been about 10 years since I visited this glacier)
- Flattop Mountain
- Homer Spit...doable, but major PITA factor.
- Any number of side roads on the Parks or Glenn highways;
- Denali Highway;
- Whittier ...doable but a PITA factor once your "in" Whittier...not sure that Whittier is a valid sightseeing spot anyway;
- Girdwood...issue is where do you put the MH when you're there?
- Hope...same as Girdwood;
- Talkeetna....same as Girdwood
Most of the towns mentioned above are small enough to walk around if you're camping nearby...but I don't know if they have campgrounds as I never RV'd in Alaska...the towns would be painful to spend a lot of driving time in a MH and I don't think they have handy parking spaces for non-camping MH's.
Most of the spots mentioned are not serviced by rental companies, but are within driving distance if you rent a car from Anchorage. Most rental agencies don't allow rental cars on the Denali Highway or on the McCarthy/Kennecott road.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is a great example. If you did find a rental, it would be quite a few miles away and down the mountain. Driving the MH up and down once was quite enough, thanks. We approached from the east and exited to the west, towards Las Vegas so returning a rental might have been a challenge.
We stayed at Jacobs Lake, the only full hookup CG there. It is about 50 miles to the North Rim lodge from that CG. If you had to pay mileage on the rental, that could be a problem, too.

Homer has plenty of campgrounds, some with full hook ups. You could park and walk to all of the attractions from any one of them.

There are very few places in Canada where you can't obtain public transportation in one form or another.(Trains-Buses-Taxi Cabs-Rental Cars Etc.) That said it is the convenience a Toad provides that makes one a necessity in Our Case!
