I guess we must be lucky. We've never gotten any comments other than friendly/curious ones, and we don't think people make fun of us or hate us.
I figure most people have hobbies that cost money. But those hobbies aren't always readily visible. When you are visible, you're bound to get the occasional comment or question.
FWIW, I don't think the comments and questions you're getting are odd at all. I believe everyone is concerned at least to some extent with fuel prices. My guess is people are asking you to get a little reassurance. When they see someone buying fuel for recreation, it probably reassures them a bit that things must not be that bad. At least not yet . . .

As I've readjusted my spending habits at home, I simply tell them that -- and they look at me really funny.

My response is I worked very hard my whole life, made some very good decisions, received some very good luck, but most of all I always controlled my money rather than letting my money control me.

My response to them (last night) was that the cost of everything else is keeping pace and I still get to sleep on my own bed.

I get a kick out of some of the "greenies" I run into when fueling up.....a Prius owner started preaching to me about her car's attributes the other day at the pumps(she had a bright green bumper sticker which said "I don't pollute when I commute!")......I asked her what about all the energy it takes to build her batteries and to charge them every nite? Doesn't that use some kind of fuel and cause pollution, too....not to mention increase the overall load on the grid---which also causes all of us to spend more for electricity? She says to me, "I don't know---does it?"
