We just did I81 up thru PA and back and also Fancy Gap and have the 5 speed Allison tranny. I've some brake problems right now so was real careful this trip. Started with getting the speed down before the crest (truckers hated me) and then first turning off Electric Overdrive, then depending on the grade just kept downshifting. I read the Allison book and this is suggested by them also, downshift and use the tranny for slowing. The two keys being Start slow and downshift early to slow more if needed. Once I'd see the bottom and that it was clear I'd let her roll-on.

Rule?

Neutral, no brakes. They steer better than you think.

Mark I try to have a sense of humor about most things. Mountain braking concerns is not a joking manner just on an outside chance someone would take it and run with 180 degree advice.

As a young driver I had a loaded grain truck pop out of 2nd gear. Thankfully it was a short hill AND no cars were coming as it was a T intersect. Freewheeling down any incline in any loaded truck has the smell of death.

An example of a humorous 180 degree reply would be like when someone states they have a small leak they can not fine so what should they do and you reply, "Just wait and it will be easier to find".

I do have the Allison Series 1000 transmission, so, if there is no switch does it mean that the grade braking feature works automatically and does overdrive need to be off? The chassis manual only refers to shifting out of overdrive and says nothing about how or when grade braking works.

Doesn't sound like you have the grade braking feature in your unit.

I don't have a grade Brake switch either but the tranny stays engaged so the engine can brake the rig as I downshift.
