Hi:

I have a Jayco 27BH, 2005 model. It has a 12V plug and antenae jack pre wired for the TV which can run on 12Volt. It says use for TV only. I would like to plug a small 12V to 110V inverter into it to power the stereo to run radio when boondocking. WOuld it be ok to run the TV and stereo off this via 110 so I could have surround and DVD using a 1500 Watt converter? The TV is rated at 700W, the stereo has no wattage information to help me out. I was hoping to be able to connect both and leave them so as not to have to unplug and plug as this socket is hard to plug into. I pulled the cover and the wiring is household grade so I am not worried much about the wiring causing a problem either.

Your watt numbers look wrong for your TV. Are you sure it is not 70w not 700w?

Though I can't tell you if it's "right" or not, we do the very thing you're wanting to do. Have been for 4 years with no issues to date.

I was just at Canadian Tire. I can find a small 400w inverter that will plug into the 12V plug. I also found a 1700 w that needs #2 wires direct to battery. So, what I need are your thoughts. I am pretty sure the TV was 700 w. So, this makes it hard becuase the wiring issues are a problem. I guess the best way is to back feed the 110 curcuit from the breaker system when I want the inverter on so I can get power to the devices. Problem is how do I run heavier gauge battery wire to the inverter? Can I just use the power feed to my breaker box and power the inverter from there?

You will be lucky to get 100 watts out of the 12 volt connector.

As Smkettner said. 100 watts out of that jack is pushing it. .BIG TIME

I'd put a small to medium (300-2000) watt TRUE sine wave inverter such as Smkettner's Prosine (I use a 2.0, he uses an 1800) somewhere close to the batteries, if you go over 1,000 watts I'd get bigger batteries.

Radios tend to 'Object' to MSW inverters by the way and all the small ones you might plug in are MSW

Thanks, that was what I suspected. Given my trailer has an insulated underbelly my options for pulling big cables are limited. I am going to see if I can get cables to my load centre. Then I will do the bigger converter. I have two group 76 12 volt batteries. I would rather have 4 big 6 volt. We will see. For the next few trips I think I will bring the getto blaster and batteries. Before I spend all this money on inverter and bigger batteries and cables I think I might just go Honda EU3000....

depending on your radio, if its portable and uses 6~8 batteries than its 9~12V. You might be able to run wires directly from the battery hook ups in the radio to the 12v outlet. When I used to tent camp I would bring a 12v deep cycle battery to run a portable radio that I wired up. The radio has a transformer that converts the ac to dc so if you wire direct you will have less heat loss/power loss.

Even if your radio isn't 12V Wally World and Radio Shack sell 12V plug in adapters that have adjustable output settings. Should run a boom box fine. I put an ammeter on the input for my 27" CRT Tv, DVD player/ surround sound amp, and Satellite receiver, and found my 175 watt, 400 surge inverter handled it all just fine. Total pull was just over 125 watts.

I spoke to Jayco on precisely this question and the answer is NO do not plug an inverter into this socket. Depending on the amp draw you will/can fry the wiring.
