Before I jumped into work camping & volunteering on a full-time basis, I thought it might be a good idea to try it at a local county CG to see if the experience suited me. I filled out the application and learned a county CG about 5 miles away needed a host right away.

Thinking I might move the process along, I went to the CG to find the hiring ranger and have a chat about their needs/expectations. I asked the first ranger I saw and he basically told me to contact the county volunteer coordinator and didn't offer any more info.

I later met a second ranger who told me the first ranger was the one who supervises volunteers and makes hiring decisions. He was the same one who wouldn't give me the time of day.

I'm glad I learned this before I put in too much effort to get hired. I got the feeling he was ROJ (retired on job) and anything beyond cashing his paycheck was more effort than he was willing to expend.

Perhaps you needed to follow protocol.....

Don't give up.

Which park did you try? We used to work for SD county parks.

Good you found out early before making a commitment. Protocal or not, I would have gone to the park myself ahead of time to see if I was even slightly interested before applying.

Thanks Dianne and Othertonka,
I'm not sure where I didn't follow protocol. I filled out the application and submitted it through the Volunteer Coordinator. As for going to the CG to ask about their needs, when I was in the high-tech industry, we called that initiative. Why wait around for others to act? I prefer to get ahead of the curve.

Did you (Dianne) work for SDC as a volunteer or an employee?

Nothing like the good ol' NOT MY JOB mentality. Better off distancing yourself from working for that person.
