We went to the local races this morn. I started the Onan(5500 Marquis) at 7:30 A.M. It ran without a hiccup until 3:00PM then it would die for no reason. It would restart easily and die again 30 min later. I checked the oil and added 1 pint.Same result. It would die when the second AC kicked in. Motor would stumble and die. I got home and shut off the breakers and done some looking. When I got the throttle linkage and revved the engine a little , it would die just like the fire had been shut off. When it decided to die, there was nothing to be done about it.Taking off the load did not help.I just replaced the air filter and checked and cleaned the plugs. Also drained carbon from muffler, which there was none. But when it is running it is running smooth as silk. Thanks for any insight. WE are leaving in the morning for the lake.

Model 5.5BGMFA26105H

Serial: SNC990874252

Edited to add generator specs.Just got back from the lake. Had an accident.Fell over backwards over a cooking grill.Went to Dr. and got x-ray no broken bones just badly bruised.

Model/spec/serial number of the genset would be helpful to know what you have. Is it fuel injected or carbureted? Mechancial governor or electroninc? What controller? New one that displays fault codes?

Fuel level in the MH? Genset shoul dstop if less than 1/4, sometimes 1/3.

You added oil. Was it low? What kind/type oil are you using?

When was it last serviced?

It will also kick out on high temp. I didn't see fuel filter in your list. If its got some crude in it, it will strave the carb. coking it down. JM2Cents Bill

How much fuel was in the gas tank? Generator pickup tubes are intentionally set well up from the bottom of the tank, so you cann run your tank out of fuel and leave you stranded. Some pickup tubes are set ridiculously high, maybe 1/3 tank from the bottom. Did you have less than a third tank of gas?

You could try filling the tank and trying the gen, or even connecting a seperate portable tank and see if it runs. That would rule out a clogged pickup tube too.

Maybe someone else has some other ideas.

Fuel filter good, 65 gallon tank full.I don't think it was a temp problem,Ambient was 97 with a strong breeze. When I opened generator bay door it really didn't seem that hot, probably 120 .

That sounds very much like the regulator board is going out. If it runs fine until the load jumps up and then dies that frequently is the controller(regulator?) board.

Our 5500 Marquis acted the same way. The diagnostic code indicated lack of fuel even though the tank was full. The dealer replaced the fuel pump (still under warranty) and it has run flawlessly for 65 hours since.

Good luck!

If you answer gunny's questions, he may be able to help you, versus everyone guessing.
