I have been there about 15 years ago when I was in HS. I remember death counts posted on signs from cars that have crashed driving there. Am I right?

My friend kept his boat in the water all week, it very calm at night so it should be ok. Make sure its tied up well during the day and win and wake make it somewhat choppy.
The death count the other guy quotes is for the Kern river NOT the lake.

This is for people trying to swim in the river, not for the lake or driving.

Stayed there for five days in Aug. a couple of years ago, during the week, except for the wind, it was GREAT. Then Friday night hit and what a zoo. Had people camping right on top of and in between us, totally nuts and up to all hours of the night. I'll probably never go back there, for sure not on a weekend, and this was a "regular" weekend. All the low lifes from Bakeersfield arrive on Friday night. We had a guy drive his SUV between our rig and the water, had to put two wheels in the water to clear, that's how close we were to the water.
Those pictures are pretty representative of what I experienced, except about twice as many people. I can't imagine what it will be like over the 4th.
Yes you can leave your boat in 24/7 but be sure to have a BIG anchor with lots of chain for the afternoon wind storms, the wind comes up like clockwork around 1:00 and blows like mad until just after sundown, then it's real nice. You'll also need a permit for a campfire but that's easily obtained from a ranger. The rangers were very nice in my experience.

That's been a problem with the Kern River for the last 15-20 years. And not just from Bakenfields. Lots of trash from the LA and Ridgecrest/Victorville areas also. Oh, he77.... there's trash from everywhere - it seems to be a magnet for them..... sigh....

Ahhh... I don't think it is for people "trying to swim in the river".... I think it is for the number of drownings that have occurred over the years in the river! Trying to swim and drowning are related, but definitely two different things...
