It doesn't matter what cab the OP wants. He wants to know the difference between long box and short box. That difference is the same no matter what cab is his choice. That is what the replies talked about.

Must agree with 66stang351! No the OP never stated weather it was a standard cab, extended cab, crew cab, crew cab with the extended cab, Mega cab, Ford, Chevrolet or Dodge. If I am purchasing a vehicle I already have my mind made up of weather I am getting a crew cab or standard cab and the only deciding factor would be long or short bed. With all things considered the only difference in length would be the bed. Sounds like a straight forward question and straight forward answers to me.

My opinion? Neither one is 'better', but each has it's advantages. The short bed turns sharper which is really nice for getting into and around the camping spots, backing into tight spots, etc. It's much easier around town as a daily driver or unhooked and tooling around site seeing. But...it does require a slider hitch for turning. I use the Superglide automatic slider.

Then there's the long bed, it rides a little better and has more room for stuff in the bed, plus you don't need a slider hitch. However, around town that length (especially if a crew cab) can be a bit bothersome when turning or parking, as well as backing into spots with the trailer hooked up.

My reason for the SB was I wanted the crew cab without the length. I use it as a daily driver and it's much easier around town. And...that's about it.

agree.
What's best for me will not be best for everyone.
The short bed truck was my requirement as the long bed truck wasn't going to cut it for my maneuvering/parking needs. I've had both and for hauling a 5th wheel one isn't better that the other.

A sliding hitch is NOT absolutely necessary for a SB truck. I tow with a shortbed, have a manual slider hitch (Hijacker 16k) and have NEVER had a need to use it. I've been pulling into campsites around the country for the past year and have come close to the cab when parking but so far no hits. I'm not saying a slider isn't a good idea as there may be situations which I haven't encountered yet where it may be necessary (that's why I have a manual slider). I'm sure the fact my fiver has an extended pin box has something to do with it. I really don't foresee any situation where I'll really need to use the slider but perhaps that time is coming.

I agree with what longtrailer48 says. I've pulled with both long and short box trucks, they both have good and bad things about it. My main drawback on the SB is that I have problems hauling all of my camping stuff.

Ya gotta do that search and read until you overdose. The slider gang usually jump in and justify their spendings with pay me not or pay me later thoughts. I run a short box without slider and have never come close to the cab. Ya gotta keep some things in mind when driving. it helps to look first

I have a short bed w/o a slider and have had no problems getting in or out. Some models have 'caved' in corners that allow them to pass by the cab more easily. Ours doesn't have that and we do okay. Long beds are just too long for me, been there done that.

Thats the same mentality as I have never dropped my 5ver on my bedrails, so I don't need a bedsaver, no I don't have a bedsaver nor do I intend to get one, but its certainally not bad advice to suggest a bedsaver or a slider, common sense tells you it only takes once. I have never come close to my cab either, but I am not foolish enough to think it can NEVER happen, and ANYONE that thinks it can never happen is pretty foolish.

I did not say it could never happen Some day one of those gall darn meteorites will probably hit me on the head. I just thought of something rather basic. I wonder if way back when my dad would have bought into putting a slider on the tractor that pulled the sugar/cow po po spreader.

I am just waiting for someone to invent and patent some kind of deflector that fits along the lower portion of the tires that is controlled my microwave transmission that will drop down and skid the tires around a curb when one cuts a corner too short.
