The sofa bed in our 5th wheel is typical of most trailers. To increase the comfort I've added sections of 1/4" plywood over the frame to give stability and 3" of memory foam to lay on. It's still not very comfortable. The 3" foam is the most I can fold into the sofa or I would add more foam. An uncomfortable sofa normally would not be a bad thing to keep sister in law from spending the night except my daughter and soninlaw usually sleep on it when they go with us (infrequently). This set up is still not very comfortable. I was thinking of a queen size air mattress to lay on the plywood. It wouldn't take long to inflate and deflate for night use. They both weight more that they should, combined about 400lbs. Have any of you used this set up? Will an air mattess handle this much weight?

We do exactly that. A queen size Coleman air bed makes the sofa sleep like a real bed. We occasionally keep a young grandchild in the bedroom to keep them away from the gas range and the door. The Air bed makes a night on the sofa tolerable.

Chief, I agree with the air mattress idea. I open out my couch of my Sea Breeze, put a single air mattress on top and then throw a blanket to cover up with and I'm comfortable as heck.

We're thinking of taking out our sofa and putting in a single pillow top mattress with some throw pillows as a backstop. Sort of like a day bed you'd have in a gust bedroom

We know someone else who has done this and they swear it is 100x's more comfortable

My Bighorn came with an air mattress in the sleeper sofa and it's great. DW and I sometimes use it while we watch late night movies as well as when the grandkids come for a visit. It's more comfortable than the Select Comfort at home.

Our Montana also came with a sleeper sofa air mattress. It was well thought out and is much more comfortable that traditional sleeper sofa. We love ours!
