Hello, I don't post often but read every day, you guys are awesome with your knowledge. I recently purchased an older 22 ft travel trailer. The battery is mounted on the tongue, exposed to the world and all its 'elements'..however it is in a box. I am going on a trip where the trailer will be unattended for periods of time. Does anyone know if a LOCKING battery hold down is on the market? also, how does everyone secure their propane tanks?
Thanks for any help

Unattended for how log? If only a day I would not worry about it. In over 60,000 miles nobody has stolen our propane tanks or battery, all of which are not locked and are out in open on TT tongue. I'm sure stuff gets stolen, but IMO it is rare. Personally never met an RVer who had said they were rob'd (except maybe at gas pumps).

Do not know of a locking battery hold down but you could wrap a chain around it and padlock.. Don't know how effective it would be though

Wrap a cable or chain to keep the honest people off your stuff.

Yeah, I had thought of the chain, maybe a motorcycle cable and lock. In a campground there would probably not be a problem, but we are going to be at a motel for 2 days during our trip, and I think there is a different sort of people that could be in the area. I was talking to a parts house today, and he said all of his old batteries were stolen for the lead content. that is what got me to thinking (always a bad idea!)
thanks for the responses.

Well I guess I am just one of the lucky ones. Last year I had to replace both tanks, regulators and hoses to the tanks, the hose to the TT, hold down brackets for the tanks, both tops off the battery boxes, and one 6 volt battery and cables. This all came to just under 500.00 dollars. Now I live in a very quiet nieghborhood and the Outback is parked on the side of my house. This came as a complete surprise. I now have locking hasps on the main cover, both tanks have tabs welded to the bottoms with locks. Both batteries have 1/2" all thread welded on both sides with a 1/8 thick steel strap going over the top of the batteries and both are locked. I drilled the all thread and put the locks throught the hole. All this work just to slow down some low life that thought he needed my equippment more then I did. After all this work I know it will just slow them down and make then have to work so maybe they will go somewhere else. So to answer your question yes I would lock everything, feel free to copy my ideas. Good luck

Back when we had a TT, we had dual batteries on the tongue and I secured them using 3/16 diameter stainless aircraft cable and a padlock. I looped the cable around the batteries in their boxes and made the length tight enough to just get the lock shackle to pull it together. Total cost under $20.00. I only did this cause several other TT's in our storage area had their batteries stolen by a bunch of kids one night. While the cable can be cut with the right tools it does keep kids and others from simply walking away with them.
