For the first time, we were hit with a virus. According to the repairman, it's called Heur (her). According to the internet, it's been around for a while. He said it was new. He also said there is NO virus protection out there that's catching it. In the last few weeks he's had many people coming in with the problem. He had 6 on his desk!
Here's the problem.....the virus accesses when you close your firewall.....which we did while loading the new internet provider software. You can't load it without closing the firewall!!! Almost immediately, we lost EVERYTHING! All of everything was gone....no "start" at the bottom...no menus anywhere. Because it was a laptop, it would cost a lot to fix and they may not be able to fix it. We took it as a sign to buy another computer . Repairman said someone else had come in a few days ago and their USB ports were even fried and wouldn't work!!!
Good luck -- I hope all of you do NOT get it! and yes, I did have everything backed up (thank you, lord!)

Just goes to show you, don't go anywhere with your fire wall down. Nope, do go anywhere without it.

Interesting.. I never close my firewall unless I'm shutting down the computer
Then the firewall closes AFTER the internet adapter closes
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

With this virus, it doesn't matter WHAT firewall you have. AND we HAD to shut it down to download the Qwest software to get internet. We tried it without shutting down the firewall and it wouldn't load.

I am actually guessing that the virus is not named "heur" but rather it was detected via heuristics which is a technique for determining files that may have viral characteristics. Typically they are either false positives (doesn't sound like the case here) or it's a virus that has not been identified by your AV vendor or has not even been discovered yet. It would be best for you to submit this to your AV vendor for their examination if you can also so that they can dig into the details.
P.S. this may also speak to the level of knowledge of your repairman.
P.P.S. if it was your repairman that sold you your new computer, i would take it back.

How much did this "Repairman" ding you for this service call and New PC?
A friend of my DW ask me for a fix for her PC problem and after explaining it to her she decided to go with a "Professional" for a $245 service call, but he said it couldn't be repaired and sold her a new one. All it needed was an "AVG" house cleaning. Go figure.
