If you don't want a small car choose any GM car with the 3.8 v6. They get great milage, reliable, easy to work on. I have had 2 both averaged 30mpg. One was in the bigest Olds they made and got 30 mpg. You can find it in some mid sived cars also.
Ny Neice has a Focus, She got 30 mpg on a trip to Tenn. all highway with hills 70 mph.

I think that the Fusion is a great car, it was one of two cars that my wife and I settled on when looking for a reliable, well built, efficient sedan. We went with the new Camry, but would have chosen the Fusion if the deal would have worked. Camry with 2.4 4 cylinder, 5 speed auto, solid 32-33mpg at 70mph.
Laughable to compare a tiny CRX to modern day sedans. Half the size, less than half the power, no anti-lock brakes, two airbags at most. Fun little basic transportation but hardly the car that the Fusion and Focus are.
Just wish we had the European Focus with the excellant diesel engine, 50+mpg.

My dad has a 2003 Focus, and in realistic driving, using common sense and driving like anyone should, gets between 34 and 38 depending on the terrain. Long distance driving on the interstate down to south Alabama, he can get 35 at 70mph consistantly. And, it's an automatic tranny, loaded SE model.

I just bought my DW a used 2007 Focus 2.0 Auto that was at a local dealer for a great price. It has 10,000 miles so it is broken in and has been returning a solid 30 mpg which is in town back and forth, about 10 miles round trip to work.General Hwy mileage is 34-35.This is mostly hwy with some in town stop and go.I am taking a trip to New Joisy in a week for business and I will be checking it for a LONG all hwy(95)trip and I am curious to see how many mpg's I can squeak out of her.The DW gets to drive the Dodge CTD while I'm gone(Poor Truck!)I have to say, even though I do not drive it much,I am very happy with this car.Rides well, plenty of power, and very easy to get in and out of for a large guy.

Looks like the Focus has been redeemed. The 35-38 mpg figures posted recently are not bad mileage. The 30 and sub-30 mpg figures that were being posted earlier were unacceptable.

gitane59, YW and the gear box is not to shabby (not tight but not that loose) for a cheap daily driver. The manuals definately get better fuel mileage.

On another note, I have a buddy that has a Fuzion for a work vehicle and he only averages 23mpg in mixed city/hwy driving.

2003 Focus Wagon...26 mpg all around driving. On the highway, I've gotten up to 30 mpg. But....I can count on getting 26.
That's terrible. I get 1-2mpg better than that driving all 4 wheels!

One of my good friends gets mid-teens driving his '07 Imprezza. Again... the driver can be more of a factor than the car.

I have a 2003 Focus SVT ZX5 manual. I have a 3 mile commute to work, with many traffic lights and no freeway cruising to or from. I get around 25 MPG in that commute, for reference I got about 12 MPG in my explorer and 18 mpg in my ol Taurus SHO manual.
In mixed driving, I've seen a max of 28 MPG, but I freqently drive at higher than legal speeds, redline frequently, and the Focus has 96K miles, and never had a tune up. I've taken one trip at steady speeds on the highway, used the full tank and saw 37 MPG, but I kept the speed at 65-70, which is very difficult for me to do normally.

To compare the Honda CRX to a Ford Focus Wagon is just plain stupid. Compare the CRX to the Smart car...
The Focus Wagon is a 5 passenger compact. The CRX is a 2 passenger sport sub compact.

The Focus has HP ratings ranging from 110hp to 170hp. The CRX had HP ratings ranging from 58hp to 108hp. (North America numbers)

My MIL gets a consistent 35 MPG in her 2006 Focus. It is a four door with automatic transmission. I on the other hand get a paltry 30 MPG in my 2008 Cobalt. I should have bought a Ford.
