Looking to spend some time in the Adirondacks this summer. Are there any recommendations for places/things to see and do? Any campground recommendations?
Thanks to all who take time to respond.

We like to go to Old Forge camping resort. Nice campground with some sites on the water. Lots of shops in town and inlet has a beach which is gorgeous about 10 minutes away. If you have kids they'll love Enchanted Forest Water Safari which is next door.

Of course it will depend on what kind of CG you like, but we enjoyed the Wilmington-Lake Placid KOA. Nice shaded sites, and some of the pullthroughs were not only long but also wide - ours had plenty of space! Very nice pool area, some sports equipment (canoes/kayaks, I believe) for rent, cooked breakfast offered some mornings, hayrides & other family-oriented activities, and well-located. Nice clean facilities.

Touring the Olympics venues in Lake Placid is fun - they're pretty spread out, so you could spend all day doing it. A highlight: going up into the 120m ski jump, and getting to see it from the perspective that a ski jumper has!

I second Old Forge. Just happened to be passing thru there about Halloween 2007. Lots of people and kids having a good time. Wished we could stayed longer and enjoyed the atmosphere.

If you dry camp, the State has many parks throughout the Adirondacks. Only problem is no hookups. But some are in the nicest places you could want. Rawlins Pond is a nice park for one. Reserve America handles the bookings and I would suspect that many places are already booked out on weekends.

Ausable Chasm is a fun thing to see; also includes a 'mild' river raft ride at the end.

Um, that's Rollins Pond. That and Cranberry Lake are probably the nicest State (DEC) campgrounds but it's dry camping.
Around Lake Placid we stay at North Pole Resorts in the new 100 Acre Woods side.
Many people like Lake George but it's too touristy for us.
The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake and the new Natural History Museum in Tupper Lake are must-see's IMHO. DW & I were so impressed with the one in Tupper we bacame members.
Lake Placid has shopping, the Olympic ski jumps & you can take a bobsled run. If you have a canoe there's more than a summers worth of paddling.

Of course there is the overpriced tourist trap area of Lake George.
