How much space should I have between the bottom of the 5vr and the top of the truck rails? Mine is right at 4.5 inches, think I need more?

Minimum of 6 inches, and with that watch speed bumps and gutters.

4.5" more or less guarantees you will make contact sooner or later, whether it's pulling into/out of a gas station ramp or over some bumps in a campground.
I have a little over 6" and my trailer STILL touched the Retrax rail pulling out of a gas station in Ohio last year.
Some folks even recommend a minimum of 8".
Your choice.

Reese recommends a minimum of six inches, and for a very good reason.

I would say that to be safe 6 - 7 inches would be ideal.

As much as you can get. The scares that get left behind after hitting is real ugly. Ask me how I know I say 7"-8" minimum
