We ended up paying cash new. If we can't pay cash we don't buy. But with the dealings trying to get it right, Yes we are upside down. besides the iinshall loss we are down because of the dealings with the MFG and DEALER in mental health. Will never buy new again

lets assume you use your RV as much as I do mine, and would go to as many places and do as many things as we have done, and continue to do.
total co$t of RV, fuel, upkeep and site fees = $X.00 rounded to nearest whole dollar.
now figure auto travel, associated wear and tear above normal for the auto, hotel, meals and tip and extra travel time to the desired location (find a hotel near some of the places we have gone ) and stress from sleeping in a hotel bed. Our costs would be exponential from the total RV cost of ownership.

Most of the things we buy are not investments and now including in some parts of the country "Real Estate". I tell folks that want to buy a new rig or any rig for that matter that they will keep 10 years that for each $120,000 they spend will cost a $1000 a month or more to cover depreciation, taxes and insurance. So if they are going to buy they ahould be prepared to spend even more per month to use it. We try and have put 75,000 mile over the last 6.5 years.
By your definition I am up side down even though I hold the title.

Quote: I just am curious (I know, none of my business) about how many of us out here have mortgaged our souls for this purpose though.
I for one have not. I've owned my (new to me) coach for two years now and my buy in was still more than $10K less than current NADA. I'm not hanging my hat on the idea that I won't loose money if I choose to sell but I made hard choices to LIMIT my losses. We are however in our thirties and forties so I can't afford to make bone head mistakes.
I love the lifestyle as much as the next guy but no I won't mortgage our souls to do it.

The average depreciation on mine will be about $18K per year. I won't feel it until I sell it, therefore I should just keep it forever,....since it's worth what I paid for it,....to me. I would not have bought it if I hadn't been able to write a check for it. Honestly, if diesel had stayed at $1.50, buying this MH would've been a much better idea. Regrets? Not yet.

Like some say, being “up-side down” in a loan and having “negative equity” as a result of depreciating value of something are two totally different things.
Of course combining the two is what about 65% of the owners of 2000 and newer class A’s have done.

Upside down?...Right side up.? I dont care if Im inside out on the loan on my rig. Our plans are to keep it till we die..and after that it dont really matter what its worth.. ...but as long as I have "investments" who's return is more than enough to make my payments and "up keep"....I could care less what "position" Im in on a loan

Start shopping the private ads for motorhomes and it will surprise you how many are upside down.
We bought our 02 Journey last November. The party I bought it from had to put in an additional $20,000 on top of what I paid for the unit to satisfy the loan.
There was another motorhome I was looking at that was way upside down also. I couldnt buy it as the owners didnt have the money to satisfy the loan over what the motorhome was worth. Guess they still own it and making the payment, or found a sucker.
Its sad that so many get cought up in the moment of buying a new motorhome and are blind to all that creative financing and it consequences.

I always like the posts from people who say that they'll just let the bank get it back and they are "even with the board"...FALSE-A-MUNDO!! When the bank eventually gets rid of it..THEY will still owe the difference...not THAT hurts...making payments on a loan for an object you dont even possess anymore...

How much is your mental health worth? If the RV is costing you more than that, you are upside down. If the RV is costing you less than your mental health is worth, than you are RIGHT SIDE UP.
