FYI:
Excerp from FDA report dated 6-19-2008
"Today, at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Marshals seized various animal food products stored under unsanitary conditions at the PETCO Animal Supplies Distribution Center located in Joliet, Ill., pursuant to a warrant issued by the United States District Court in Chicago.
U.S. Marshals seized all FDA-regulated animal food susceptible to rodent and pest contamination. The seized products violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because it was alleged in a case filed by the United States Attorney that they were being held under unsanitary conditions. (The Act uses the term "insanitary" to describe such conditions).
During an FDA inspection of a PETCO distribution center in April, widespread and active rodent and bird infestation was found. The FDA inspected the facility again in May and found continuing and widespread infestation........"
Read entire report here, 16 states affected.

I'm glad that the FDA can protect the dogs but would prefer it if they would keep all of the contaminated human products from China out of the country. They finally are fussing at some of the phony cancer cures however.

This story was the first story on the local (Chicago) CBS TV news at 10 pm last night. Followed story with a few interviews with patrons around a local petco.

You got that right!
This was posted on an other forum. Real interesting and informative.
BTW It's not OT because the speaker makes reference to contaminated 'pet food' and human goods from China. AND that 'pets should be removed from the room' if you drop one of these.
Quite frank;y I have to admit I did NOT know about what is talked about on this and didn't think of the pets safety.

and keep in mind the lepto shot your dog gets is never the strain that is currently prevelant, vacc company's can not keep up with that one.

I know that no method is fool proof, but I'm glad I am now feeding raw. The more I read about kibble, the more I wish I started raw a long time ago.

Just like everything else it was inevidable. The need for more and making it faster is IMHO the reason for where everything is today.
mass production (factory farming) of our human feed, the need to make them grow bigger and faster(bolus's injected into every beef cattle)antibiotics to make sure they stay growing faster and bigger and on and on. It really has and will continue to get worse. And pet food ingredients are derived in part mostly from the bottom of this chain.
The light I'm seeing at the end of this tunnel is that more people are seeking out knowledge and the growing amount of people that are buying local and wanting to KNOW where their food is coming from and how it was grown and processed.
Organic was never a threat to big business, they see now that it will and can be. Most are slicing a pie of their business to enter in to it.

I am glad they found it and are hopefully cleaning it up.
I am not a fan of Petco and will not shop there because they sell Dogs and Cats.
I prefer Petsmart that allows for the adoptions of dogs and cats but does not sell them.

Isn't that odd? Florida must be different. In my experience with volunteering at shelters, we often have adoption days at Petco. Matter of fact, I've never seen a Petco in Texas or Oklahoma that sells cats & dogs, they all work with shelters & rescues to find homes for their animals.
Just like Petsmart they sell small critters, fish, & reptiles but when it comes to cats, dogs, & rabbits they have organizations come in for adoption days.

Back to the original topic, that makes me glad I've been buying our pet food from Southern Agriculture. It's hard enough to feel confident with a brand, let alone knowing that the food can get contaminated in storage.

I guess since she never shops there she is just basing her decision on rumor.

Ours here locally do not sell dogs and cats and do have regular adoption events with local shelters.
