1. Helping is one thing, and it's a good thing to do, but you don't have to give up your life because someone else is having problems. If it's not here somewhere, it's the classic Indian Ocean typhoons every year or earthquakes in Japan or people dying from silly easily preventable things in Africa or whatever.

2. To be very blunt: Living in low lying terrain in a major river basin flood plain area and below sea level in hurricane alley pretty much falls in the self inflicted category. Yes, I feel sorry for them just like anyone else should and would go help if I had the funds to do so, but it gets a little old after the 3rd or 4th time around with the same people in the same area. A while back I was listening to a guy with his entire family complaining that he lost everything he owned FOUR TIMES. I asked where he lived then later looked it up on a topographical map and looked at local weather patterns - it turns out he had kept rebuilding his house literally within sight of the Mississippi River in the area labeled "flood plains" that tends to flood every time a cloud goes over.

3. Consider that by owning a RV, you can RUN and don't have to be one of those individuals needing help when the water starts to rise where you live. Flood starts, hurricane approaches, you hitch up and run for high dry ground until the problem goes away.

Cedar Rapids resident here. My thoughts? Absolutely buy the RV! Keep the economy thumping along and please don't pass on a purchase out of sympathy.

FYI: wide parts of the Cedar Rapids area were actually OUTSIDE the 100-year flood areas, so generalizations about self-inflicted damages are a bit of a stretch to say the least. The flooding in town exceeded even the 500-year flood map boundaries.

What jack and Diane said! How do equate not buying an RV and those people who lost their homes?

Realter,
I admire the spirit of your post and you will be rewarded some day for your kind, compasionate heart.
Buy your new RV and then volunteer your time to help the disaster relief.

You obviously feel the need to help, so help. That is an admirable way to think. Not sure if not buying something you and your family want is the way to do that. I give my time and money to organizations that provide relief in disasters, but I still have a responsibility to provide a quality of life for my family.

I live in Des Moines and I'm a HVAC contractor so I see the damage close up and personal. It is terribly painful to see people without much who got hammered especially since in Des Moines the levee that ruptured and allowed most of the flooding was known to be bad since 1993 and was not repaired. On the other hand I bough a fifth wheel a few weeks ago and I plan to enjoy grandchildren. My pickup camper was getting seriously crowded with a 4 year old, a 9 year old and me! I asked the 4 year old where we should go on vacation and he said "Indianola" ( a town about 12 miles from Des Moines). I said that might be all the diesel fuel we can afford!

Buy the RV and then use it to help. After hurricane Andrew hit FL several years ago, my dad had a job taking donated RV's down to victims who had nowhere to live. He loved the job because he enjoys helping people out. Unless you intend to take the money you would spend on the RV to Iowa, there is no reason not to use your hard-earned money to improve your lifestyle. Don't feel guilty because someone else doesn't have what you have. There will always be someone somewhere who needs help.

I was here in NOLA through Katrina and Rita. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced and lost their homes and no one was worried about who was buying what.

Joke question, right? Do you always turn to anonymous forums on the internet to satisfy your moral questions? It's all relative--next time you bite into a juicy hamburger and pop some fries, come on over and ask us if it ok since there are children starving in Darfur.

Yes it is wrong. Send the $100,000 to the Red Cross instead.
