Crates are like a crib and car seat all rolled into one. Children are required to ride in car seats. Most children with whom we are acquainted have slept in a crib.

Our dogs have always had their crates. We have a crate for each dog. However, two dogs insist on sleeping together in one crate when we are home, and the crates are left open.

Kamper_Kelly,

Your dog will be much safer in a crate than tied to a tree, or running free. As long as you are not planning on leaving him alone during the heat of the day, are aware of the possibility of overheating, and the dog has constant access to water, he should be fine. It sounds like you are doing a swell job of familiarizing him with his crate!

Good Luck!

Please, let us all know how the first trip goes.

That may be, but a wolf is not a dog

Our next trip is in late August but, we may have a test camp in the backyard before then. He has been sleeping in the crate at night now in our bedroom. He seems to like it. He doesn't even whine to be let out when my husband gets up for his run.

I never found what I considered to be an acceptable crate cover so, I ordered 330 denier Cordura to make one. As I said I'm not really concerned about overheating. He won't be in it during the day but, out hiking with us and we don't camp anyplace where it's hot at night. I'm more concerned about cold, wind, rain or just morning dew, hence the cover.

I'm glad to hear that so many people leave their dogs in the crate outside without problems. I don't want to leave him chainned up at night because, he'd hear something and take off trying to defend the campsite at full speed (until he got to the end of the lead).

I saw these on the Cabelas website. We're using a collapsable metal crate for him so, these don't fit. I ended up ordering 330 denier cordura and making him one last week.
