When should I replace the Anode Rod? There is 8 3/8 inches rod inside of the hot water heater. About 1 inch is completely gone closest to the threaded side. Does it need to be replaced now or wait until it is almost completely gone? It is about 2 1/2 years old.
Thanks Mike

A lot of people do it every year. It's some what cheaper then changing the hot water heater. It seems the winters can be rough on them, serious once they have been in the water for a session, then subject to air, it tends to make them turn to powder. Change it and be safe. Bill

If I remember right, Suburban recommends replacing when 75% is gone.

If you've lost a majority right near the threads, it should be replaced as soon as possible. You'll find that anode rods are often spent unevenly.

EXACTLY!
You need to make sure that you replace the rod when 75% is already gone, and/or if the threads start to show ANY little bit of corrosion. If the threads on the anode rod start to corrode, that means the threads on the tank are begining to corrode. If the tank threads corrode, you're screwed.
You can't replace the tank threads. The entire water tank must be replaced unfortunately.
When in doubt, replace your anode rod. They're cheap.

I change mine every year usually at the end of the season, after I back flush the tank by removing the anode rod and inserting a hose inside the tank to get all the junk out. I use a water tank fill attachment on the hose as it will fit inside the anode rod opening. After letting it drain I wrap the threads with plumbers tape and screw the new one in and I'm all set for next season.
