The temperature gauge on my motor home diplays the water temperature in degrees F but there is no indication of how hot is too hot. At what temperature do you become concerned about over heating?

What kind of Motorhome?
I pull a race trailer at 10K lbs and going up the big hills the coolant goes to 210-Oil Temp climes to 250 or so and the Allison goes to 200deg.
It always cools down back to normal which is:
Coolant: 190 deg
Oil: 200 deg
Allison: 180deg
Oh! outside temp. 80 to 90 deg.

Diesel pusher engines seem to run between 175 and 207, depending on the year, make, model, and cooling package design. The lower temperatures were more common several years ago than today. My engine peaks at 203, at which time full fan service is delivered which drops the temperature immediately. Keep in mind, even water does not boil until 212 F. (at sea level) and this is raised about 2.5F. for every one PSI in coolant pressure. Many engine have a 7 to 11 PSI rad cap and operating pressure.
I hope this helps, but perhaps another member can give you more accurate temperatures for your specific engine and set-up.

Depends on if it is 2004 or newer above 215 would concern me older engines above 205 would concern me. The newer ones run hotter due to emissions. This should not be consistent though,if it is there could be a cooling system problem.

And I would add to the above post that there can be a few degrees difference in gauges. My 1990 CC / Cat, has 195 degree thermostats in it and runs right on 195, went into Palm Springs 2 years ago at 115 degrees and it never hit 205. My Detroit in the Prevost runs at about 197ish on the gauge & on a pull will go to about 215 when the fan kicks into high speed, It is a 2 speed electric clutch set up, and pulls it right back to the 197 mark, going up and down till the hard pull is over.

My 330 ISC Cummins runs a tiny bit over 180 ( 95-100 degree temp outside) unless Im on a LONG hard pull...then it will run up to "about" 200...and come right back down after I top the grade

My Cummins diesel has shut down twice in six years due to overheat. Both times the needle was at @ 220 degrees. After some cooling system adjustments, have not seen those temps again and runs nicely at 185 degrees.

Just went on a drive in NV where the outside temp was over 100; with the fan OFF (hydraulic/temp based) it ran between 201-206 going up/down hill. when the fan kicks in (we can force it by turning the AC on, which we did) it dropped to betwene 185-200 peak.

When it gets hot outside and we're runnin ghills we will usually force it on so that the trans temp doesn't get too hot; if we wait fo rthe engine temp to climb and kick it in then the trans is already too hot (IMHO).
